Wearable Multi-Hour Low-Intensity Ultrasound for SoftTissue Healing

The utility of in-clinic therapeutic ultrasound treatment to accelerate soft tissue healing is well established in the physical rehabilitation market. Therapeutic ultrasound is used as a coded modality for shorter durations 8 to 10 minute ‘clinical’ treatments, either once or twice a week to improve patient outcomes during pre-surgery or post-surgery. While studies prove that pain management and tissue healing can be improved drastically by increasing the frequency of ultrasound usage to four to five times a week (and longer than 8-minutes), there arises an imposing hurdle. It is not practically feasible for a patient to undergo the therapy every day in a clinical setting due to time and cost constraints. “To bridge this gap, we have designed stained acoustic medicine (sam®), a wearable low-intensity ultrasound device” elucidates George K. As a dominant player in the ultrasound-based soft tissue healing space, ZetrOZ Systems has disrupted the way ultrasound has ever been used outside a clinical setting with their first ever wearable multi-hour Ultrasound for healing and pain management.

The sam® family of products are the only wearable long-duration mobile ultrasound therapy devices approved by the FDA to provide therapy for up to four hours daily. Before releasing the product in the market, ZetrOZ Systems ran sam® through level-1 and level-2 clinical efficacy trials as well as clinical verification and validation to ensure the product can be easily and successfully self-applied. The sam® clinical trials conducted across the United States also demonstrated a reduction in pain and improvement of life quality for patients with osteoarthritis, back pain, and chronic tendinopathy.

Professional athletes, arthritis patients, active-service military soldiers, and our veterans rely on daily sam® treatment for a non-invasive and drug-free therapeutic medical assistance. The product is extremely beneficial in relieving pain associated with osteoarthritis, chronic musculoskeletal injuries, ligament and tendon tears, tennis elbow, and a host of other on the job injuries.

Down the timeline, it was in early 2008 that ZetrOZ Systems designed UltrOZ, a wearable low-intensity ultrasound system for the equestrian market. With time and research, this product was approved by FDA for human use and ZetrOZ Systems launched sam® Sport in 2013. The company stirred a revolution in sports medicine as athletes could push back a surgery that often ends a career to a later stage and leverage sam® Sport to heal soft tissue and musculoskeletal pain. Since its launch, the National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball and other Professional, USOC and Collegiate Leagues have been utilizing sam® Sport to treat rotator cuff injuries, pulled hamstring strain, patellar tendinitis, and lower back pain….and other common sports injuries.

Following the success in the sporting arena, ZetrOZ Systems developed sam® Pro 2.0for commercial use to treat arthritis and other degenerative conditions.

Along with FDA, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) has approved sam® to treat knee and lower back related issues, arthritis, and other degenerative pain for every person in active service or a Veterans. “sam® is part of their standard operating procedure now. Instead of consuming opiates or going for surgery, the veteran or the soldier can now have the device prescribed by their physician for pain management and physical therapy,” says Lewis.

Taking ultrasound treatment outside of the clinical setting and making it wearable during daily activity, ZetrOZ Systems is now heavily investing in research and development. The company is collaborating with DoD to extend the possibility of sam® healing to open wounds caused by burns and shrapnel and post-surgery healing to prevent infection. ZetrOZ is also joining forces with federal institutes and universities across the U.S. to develop new sam®- based medical products.
