PRINCETON - Today, Ventis Medical announces FDA clearance of the VM-2000, a first-of-its-kind ventilator that allows medical personnel to provide advanced respiratory support with robust volume and pressure control in the field. Ventis has developed an emergency transport ventilator to treat respiratory problems with a portable, affordable, and easy-to-use design. This advancement marks a significant milestone towards making ventilators more readily available to medical teams that need them.
Whether on the battlefield, at the scene of a mass causality event, or in the emergency room, ventilators are frequently unavailable today due to usability or price. Without ventilators, emergency responders rely on Bag Valve Masks (BVMs) - devices which require a dedicated responder to squeeze air into a patient's lungs at a regular rate. Because they require the full attention of a dedicated operator, BVMs are less practical to operate for extended periods of time, and difficult to quickly scale to support a variety of crisis situations. Additionally, unlike ventilators which provide breaths to patients at a controlled volume and pressure, BVMs provide poor control of therapy resulting in frequent sub-optimal care.
The VM-2000 provides patients who need emergency respiratory support with the leading standard of care through robust volume and pressure-supported breath delivery modes. The device weighs less than many standard laptop computers, can be battery operated, and has turbine power that allows it to function without oxygen tanks. The graphical touchscreen, which allows the user to select therapy and monitor pressure and volume, is designed to allow responders to easily manage patients. Built using advanced patented technology, the VM-2000 is highly suitable for quality treatment in critical situations.
"The ventilator that Ventis developed will improve our ability to respond to emergencies and raise the standard of care, resulting in better outcomes," said Dr. Asa Margolis, Medical Director for Johns Hopkins Lifeline Critical Care Transport Program.
The team that developed the VM-2000 is led by Glenn W. Laub, MD - a cardiac surgeon, engineer, and co-founder of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) manufacturer Defibtech. Dr. Laub's guiding principle relies on the same practical-use approach that redefined defibrillation over 20 years ago with the introduction of AEDs: adapting well-established therapy through advanced technology to make it more usable in emergencies. The result is a feature rich ventilator, targeted to enter the market at a fraction of the price of the competition.
"As a cardiac surgeon, the need for a product to help responders easily deliver ventilation in high-stress emergency situations was apparent to me. During the response to any patient crashing, a member of the team is typically tied up struggling to bag the patient in the middle of the code. Addressing this need is important because access to ventilators can result in more reliable care, and allow teams to focus on other aspects of the response - potentially leading to better patient outcomes," said Dr. Glenn W. Laub, Co-Founder and CEO, Ventis Medical.
Sam Matta - Lead Clinical Nurse, Lifeline Critical Care Transport Program and Director of Education at Johns Hopkins Hospital - agrees, explaining that, "Treating and transporting patients who need respiratory care is a difficult task for health care workers whether you are in a remote location, battlefield, roadway, home, community, or emergency room. Ventis has partnered with Sanmina Corporation, the leading multinational medical device contract manufacturer, to assemble VM-2000 devices in the USA. VM-2000 devices will be available for purchase later this year.
