Shelved for decades due to patent constraints, the PortSyringe had quietly solved the very problem that today’s systems still struggle with: how to collect blood cleanly and efficiently from any access point, without forcing nurses to choose between speed and safety.

The VI ByPass Syringe^® reintroduces that vision with the same clarity of purpose. Nowhere is that closed design more critical than in blood draws from indwelling lines. Whether it’s a central line, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), midline or arterial access point, every manipulation carries risk. The VI ByPass Syringe^® eliminates those gaps. Once attached to any standard hub or needle-free port, the entire sequence is enabled through a single access point. The path from line to collection remains sealed, maintaining aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) and reducing the risk of contamination at every step.

That same system integrity carries through to venipuncture, where device changes are still a common source of sample degradation. The VI ByPass Syringe^® connects directly to a venipuncture extension set. As the plunger is pulled, an internal sliding fluid seal separates up to 4mls of flush solution or blood, which may result in a poor-quality sample, into a sealed waste chamber. The diagnostic sample then flows through a center conduit, slowing the flow of blood, which helps protect cell structure and reduces hemolysis, one of the most common causes of rejected samples in hospital labs. And because everything happens within the same device, there’s no need to swap syringes mid-procedure or transfer the blood to a tube or bottle with a separate device.

The VI ByPass Syringe^® features a Luer Lock interface that connects directly to any vascular access device. This universal compatibility was a deliberate design choice, aimed at reducing variability across departments and reinforcing hospital-wide infection control protocols.

That focus on standardization stems directly from the experience of Brown, who spent more than two decades in medical device development and helped bring the first needleless IV connector to market. In that process, he observed persistent challenges in line-based blood collection, specifically, the lack of a unified, sterile solution to improve quality samples and streamline workflows. While working on these problems, he connected with Bartholomew, who offered 30 years of bedside nursing experience. She had witnessed the clinical consequences of technology limitations for bedside nurses performing various blood collection procedures, which had led to decades of complications that burdened both patients and nurses.

Their combined expertise, encompassing both engineering and clinical aspects, created a strong foundation for Vascular Integrity. Its success is rooted in its mission of addressing the root causes of poor sample quality while improving ease of use at the bedside.

A Color-Coded Solution for Reliable Blood Draws


Vascular Integrity’s VI ByPass Syringe^® has three devices for specific clinical scenarios: VI Clear Syringe, VI Red Syringe and VI Blue Syringe. The Clear and Red devices are both direct vacuum draws; the red is for long-neck bottles and tubes. The Clear device is compatible with long and short neck bottles and tubes. The Blue device is compatible with 1 to 20 ml syringes and standard vacuum holders, making it an option for syringe draws, vacuum tubes and long neck bottle blood collection.

The VI Clear Syringe is designed specifically for traditional venipuncture and line draws. Its strength lies in precision engineering, a carefully calibrated barrel and plunger system that reduces the mechanical stress on red blood cells during aspiration. Its design closely mirrors that of a standard syringe, allowing for quick adoption by nursing staff without additional training, while delivering a clear performance upgrade in terms of blood sample quality.

The VI Red Syringe, while more streamlined, is purpose-built for use with long-neck vacuum bottles in standardized blood draw settings. It offers the same separation of waste volume and sample-preservation architecture as the rest of the ByPass platform, but without the broader compatibility of the Clear and Blue. This makes it an efficient tool for high-throughput environments where equipment and protocols are tightly controlled.

The VI Blue Syringe is designed for procedures in which syringes are required as all or part of the blood collection procedure. Utilization of ByPass Syringe for Line maintenance may significantly reduce hub manipulation. Variable syringe sizes can be used for collection and flushing. Low-volume, high-precision sampling environments such as NICUs, oncology wards, elderly care and critical care units, where use and maintenance of existing lines is common practice.
