With the EO approach, medical devices are packaged and then shipped to a third-party sterilizer, where they are exposed to the carcinogenic gas in large chambers followed by venting the carcinogenic gas, which has caused documented exposure problems in the facilities and communities where this is done.

Sterile State replaces this model with one in which no chamber is required, no carcinogenic gas is used, and the half-life of the gas Sterile State uses is one second. With the Sterile State system, packaging and sterilization take place in the same step. This system replaces the carcinogenic gas with the naturally occurring free-radical gas; nitric oxide.

With the Sterile State System packaged medical devices no longer are trucked to and from sterilization chambers. Products are packaged and directly shipped to customers. Sterile State’s technology is built around a simple but disruptive idea to put the sterilant inside the package. The EO system requires humidity, pressure and a chamber to force the EO gas into packages from the outside. Sterile State developed a polymer-based system that stores and releases nitric oxide (NO), a naturally occurring antimicrobial agent, within the packaging itself. No off-gassing is necessary because the gas is so safe around people combined with its one second half-life. This gas has been used for decades in hospitals to treat the lungs of premature infants – no other sterilant around today has also been used to treat neonates.

Sterile State’s polymer is coated onto the inside of pouches and other types of packaging, where the 100percent safe gas is generated. Within hours the devices in the packaging are sterilized, not days or weeks as with the EO system. Sterile State is not asking manufacturers to reinvent their systems. Instead, device makers and packaging suppliers, collaborate on package design changes (if any), and validation studies to save money and increase efficiency.
