Their answer is a patented biodegradable tube that stays functional for roughly six weeks, long enough for fluid to clear and the eardrum to start healing on its own. It is not a sweeping change to ear surgery, but for short-term ventilation cases, it rethinks what the device actually needs to do.

The company does not try to compete with long-term implants. What they built is aimed squarely at patients who need a few weeks of middle ear ventilation, such as serous otitis media and Eustachian tube dysfunction, and then do not need anything left behind. The tube retains its shape during treatment, the flange helps guide healing, and then it resorbs. No lingering foreign body sitting in the ears for months after the job is done. For the right patient, that is a meaningful clinical difference, not just a material story.

New devices stall regularly because they ask too much of surgeons, including new training, new tools and new habits. Skovlund kept the placement approach familiar: same incision, same technique, nothing exotic needed. On the patient side, a dissolving tube means fewer return visits just to check on something that should already be gone, and it completely cuts out the tube removal appointment. The company has focused particularly on adult patients, where short-term ventilation needs are common, but the standard tube options have not changed much.

A temporary ear problem gets expensive fast when the device managing it requires months of monitoring. Skovlunds tube is designed to match its lifespan to the actual treatment window, which cuts down on the downstream costs, including fewer clinic visits, lower risk of perforation or persistent drainage, and less time spent tracking a foreign body that the patient has largely forgotten about. The value is not in a dramatic clinical outcome; it is in removing friction from a process that currently carries more follow-up burden than the underlying condition often warrants.

Gelatin is not a new material in ear surgery, which is part of why Skovlund chose it. Familiarity matters when you are trying to get a product into operating rooms. The engineering detail that stands out is the dissolution sequence: the lumen, which is the open channel that makes the tube useful, is designed to be the last part to break down, and it retains its shape even in a wet environment. Early testing showed ventilation holding for several weeks with full eardrum healing reported once the tubes were gone. Getting patency and closure to work together, rather than trade off against each other, is where the material work earns its place.

Skovlund is not yet on the market, but they are further along than a pitch deck. Three patents, an IRB approved pilot study and early regulatory groundwork put them in a different category from early-stage concepts. The core clinical argument is also hard to dismiss: a lot of patients need ear ventilation for weeks, not a year, and device options do not always reflect that. Researchers have contacted about using the tubes architecture for localized drug delivery, which suggests that the underlying design has use beyond its original indication. For now, it is a focused otology play, and that focus is probably an asset.
