Shiftwave, a state-of-the-art neuroregulation device initially designed for Special Forces, was created with a commitment to “helping others and healing ourselves.” This mission is deeply personal for Co-Founder/CEO Dr. Mike North. Motivated by the need to reset his life after tragedy, he turned to science to restore himself.

The origins of Shiftwave trace back to one of the most challenging moments of Dr. North’s life. In 2015, he lost his best friend in the Mount Everest earthquake. While grieving, he suffered another blow—an injury at his friend’s memorial left him with a broken leg. Amid the pain and grief, he clung to his friend’s words: “There are no problems, only opportunities.” That mindset led him to explore vibration therapy for healing, ultimately designing a 3D-printed cast embedded with transducers and biometric sensors.

Partnering with Alan Macy, co-founder of BIOPAC Systems, the project quickly gained momentum. Together, they developed an app connected to the cloud, allowing North’s doctor to remotely monitor his movement and swelling. The innovation drew widespread attention, earning a feature in Forbes Magazine titled ‘Medicine of the Future’.

This groundbreaking work soon led to a Department of Defense (DOD) project, where they developed smart prosthetics for veterans. These prosthetics restored mobility and gathered insights into the wearer’s stress levels and emotional state—data that proved highly valuable.

Taking their research even further, Macy and North built a highly advanced psychophysiology lab in Santa Barbara. Macy’s expertise was unparalleled—his company, founded in 1984, remains one of the world’s leading firms in psychophysiological measurement, with its technology used by nearly every major university. They measured physiological and psychological responses in the lab, developing tactile technology to communicate with the body and mind through touch.

John Foster, PhD joined to help drive the science and technology forward, carrying over his experience from his previous company where he created the world’s first clinical cell sorter.

After three years of deep research, the team identified specific vibration patterns and frequencies capable of dramatically shifting a person’s physical and mental state.

Their research suggests these patterns may balance the nervous system, alleviate stress and anxiety, and induce 'synthetic sleep,' resembling deep sleep's physiological markers of increased CSF flow and slow wave brain activity.

A Skeptic Turned Believer

Dr. Jeff Rouse, a nationally recognized psychiatrist, was introduced to Shiftwave amid the heightened stress of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Initially skeptical, he was amazed after just one 15-minute session, experiencing a profound effect.

“I achieved profound relaxation equivalent to a full-day meditation retreat in just minutes,” stated Dr. Rouse. Together, North, Macy, Foster and Rouse propelled Shiftwave to new heights. This unit was brought directly to fire stations and Zuma Beach’s incident command post, providing much-needed relief to firefighters who were exhausted, wired, unable to sleep, and struggling with stress. In just 10 to 15 minutes, many participants experienced remarkable transformations, reporting a deep sense of relaxation, complete pain relief, and the ability to sleep for the first time in days. In fact, over half of firefighters stated that Shiftwave fully eliminated their stress.
