World’s First Intra-Organ, Real-Time Monitoring Sensor for Detection of Ischemic Events

Norway is full of highly skilled scientists and engineers, creating an excellent starting point for developing medical devices. The research performed in universities and hospitals has increased significantly, making Norway one of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with the highest share of R&D. Leading the way is Sensocure with its miniature organ-implantable biomedical sensor, IscAlert.

IscAlertTM has been developed to fill the medical need for accurate and robust patient monitoring. Key opinion leaders around the world have expressed the urgency for tissue-specific real-time monitoring of blood perfusion. IscAlertTM has a diameter of 0.8 millimeters and can be inserted into any organ without causing harm to the organ. The sensor is connected to Sensocure’s patient monitoring system providing early warning signs of ischemia at the local tissue level in real-time. Using pCO2, which is highly sensitive to decreasing blood flow, and its patented technology IscAlertTM, Sensocure provides clinicians with decision support before tissues are damaged by insufficient blood flow (ischemia).

The IscAlertTM pCO2 sensor is calibrated before each patient treatment and provides clinicians with accurate early warning signs, which commonly go undetected by traditional systemic monitoring.

Traditional patient monitoring provides no information about microvasculature with insight regarding the perfusion of internal organs or muscular and subcutaneous tissue. Such information is vital in several postoperative and ICU settings.

IscAlertTM contributes to increased patient safety and potentially saves lives. Being able to identify the problem at an early stage, IscAlertTM will support early action. The sensor will increase patient safety by alarming the clinician of ischemia in due time to save the affected organ by thrombolytic therapy or re-operation. Using IscAlertTM will result in the early detection of complications to provide urgent treatment, a reduction in hospital stays, reduced costs, and secure a better outcome for the patient with limited up-front costs for the hospitals. Also, IscAlertTM is a user-friendly patient monitoring system and very easy to implement in all hospital departments.

IscAlertTM has multiple applications—free muscle or subcutaneous flap surgeries, trauma surgeries, reconstructive surgeries, re-attachment of limbs, compartment syndromes, as well as organ transplants and internal organ ischemia. Sensocure is currently initiating several new clinical studies to explore the benefits of the IscAlertTM sensor.

Sensocure is looking for partners, as they are planning expansion both in European and the U.S. markets within the next few years. In the beginning, the company will be focusing on ramping up its market activities, making sure the IscAlertTM solution is accessible in priority markets. Sensocure aims to work closely with selected partners who have a close relationship with surgeons, anesthesia, and ICU clinicians. They are doing extensive work developing a family of products, and the future looks very promising.
