Pioneers of Disposable EEG Electrodes

For years, healthcare professionals have envisioned an EEG electrode that would not only be cost-effective and disposable but also works as well as its reusable counterparts in the market. A revolutionary product such as that would have cut down the time and cost of sterilization, as well as not require the assistance of EEG technicians, whose availability in critical care settings in the U.S. can be scarce. In many ways, the deficiencies of reusable electrodes precipitated the creation of a disposable solution. Rhythmlink is at the center of this new age technology that is transforming the brain health market by architecting a new range of electrodes that can stay on the patient even during various MRI and CT scans. To this end, Rhythmlink has introduced three different types of EEG cups—Deep Cups, Slim Cups, and their trademark Webb device—engineered with the same material. The Deep Cups have the standard rim size of the reusable cups and can be used in the same manner. The Slim Cups, on the other hand, are designed with a wider rim, which can assist with protecting skin health during long term EEG recording. Compared to a Deep Cup, the Slim Cup distributes the pressure on the broad rim and reduces the risk of skin breakdown. The third design, Webb is a patented electrode with a flat surface and no rim. Designed for patients with higher skin breakdown risk such as ICU patients, pediatrics, neonatal patients and others with skin health concerns, the Webb Electrode spreads the pressure over the entire patch. For better efficiency, Rhythmlink enables customers to customize their EEG device with different forms of the cups according to protocols a clinician might require, without additional charges.

Rhythmlink’s electrode options include standard EEG electrode, CT electrodes, and MRIQuick Connect System. The standard EEG electrode is a low-cost option for outpatient EEG or sleep studies. Whereas, the CT electrodes are developed specifically for CT scans making it cheaper and easier to use than an MRI electrode. For instance, a small-sized institution that only has CT scan available in their facility does not have to pay for the functionalities of an MRI related electrode.

The MRI Quick Connect System comes in the form of a single cable connector that can house 10 electrodes and has specific disconnection points for leads and electrodes, which enables the nurses, technologists, or other bedside staff to easily disconnect and reconnect the leads as per requirement. Quick Connect reduces the waiting time between the availability of EEG technicians to reconnect the patient to the device after every MRI scan.

As a testament to the proficiency of Rhythmlink’s devices, Hanson explains that a large healthcare facility with a substantial volume of patients was losing time in disconnecting and reconnecting the electrodes. On applying Rhythmlink’s electrodes, the only FDA approved device to stay on the patient during imaging, the client was able to increase their efficiency exponentially, improve workflow, reduce time wastage, and save valuable resources.

According to Hanson, Rhythmlink is gearing up toward getting through the ER door. “One can see a physical seizure but if the patient is unconscious, it is hard for doctors in a small facility to make a prognosis. Emergency room physicians can use EEG on these patients to get a clear understanding of the problem. We are looking forward to fulfilling this gap with our flexible, disposable, inexpensive, and easy to use electrodes,” explains Hanson.

Rhythmlink Announces Investment Partnership With Graham Partners

The investment was completed on March 15, 2023.

This new relationship with Graham follows Rhythmlink’s extremely successful partnership with New Heritage Capital, a Boston-based private equity firm that invested in Rhythmlink in 2019. Under partnership with New Heritage Rhythmlink grew rapidly, acquired Chalgren Enterprises and expanded their existing product line to include EMG and NCV diagnostic consumable devices. Joe Straczek, COO and CFO for Rhythmlink, spoke on the success of this relationship.
