Precision Medical Devices for Better Sleep Apnea Therapy

According to a study published recently, an estimate of over 1 billion people worldwide suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) out of which more than 54 million adults in the U.S. alone endure this condition. What is even worse is that above 80 percent of the population are still not diagnosed with OSA. Patients with OSA are subjected to significant comorbidities like heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and other health hazards which could endanger their lives. Initially, physicians tried treating patients using the CPAP machine where a person had to wear the device every night for the rest of their lives which turned out to be difficult for many. Especially in scenarios like the patient refusing to wear the CPAP machine or the device malfunctioning or contraindications, there was a need for an alternative therapy. However, the Executive team at ProSomnus identified an opportunity to create an effective, comfortable and economical therapy with an intra-oral precision medical device that is provided by sleep dentists after diagnosis by a sleep physician. This led to the inception of ProSomnus in 2016 with a fundamentally different approach.

“Our ultimate objective was to provide better therapy for patients with OSA. Given that OSA is a lifelong disease and patients have trouble tolerating CPAP, we set off to engineer a Medical Device that patients could incorporate into their everyday lives,” begins Len Liptak, co-founder, and CEO of ProSomnus. The company’s devices are customized based on the treatment plan and the patient’s intra-oral anatomy which enables precision treatment. ProSomnus’s Sleep and Snore Devices are smaller in size, biocompatible, and easy to use. “What has been gratifying is the growing number of clinical reports and scientific investigations verifying that patients are sleeping and breathing better with their ProSomnus Devices,” notes Liptak.

Mitigation of side-effects is another reason why ProSomnus Devices are novel. With incumbent therapies patients report side-effects such as bite changes, or illnesses based on bacteria build-up. ProSomnus Devices addresses these concerns by using a special medical grade material and a precision manufacturing platform.



“When ProSomnus entered the Medical Device arena, it birthed a new paradigm in Oral Appliance Therapy. With the new digital platform, they were able to offer unlimited prescriptions, a smaller footprint, a clear and metal-free framework and elimination of bio-gunk. Best of all, since we are treating a life-threatening condition, my patients are never out of therapy,” notes Kent Smith, DDS, DABDSM, DASBA of Dallas, TX.

Economics is another reason ProSomnus is poised to disrupt the market for OSA therapies. OSA therapy with ProSomnus Devices is estimated to be five times less expensive than CPAP and up to twenty times less than surgically implanted, neurostimulation devices. “With so many undiagnosed and untreated patients with OSA, there needs to be both an effective and economical therapy. ProSomnus Devices are designed to address this need,” adds Liptak.

The success of ProSomnus’s patented, FDA cleared, Class II Medical Devices has created an expanding base of happy patients and satisfied care providers. The company recently collaborated with the U.S. Army for a project regarding the usage of ProSomnus Devices for service people with OSA. CPAP wasn’t a practical choice for those in the Army due to their unique needs and the distinctive environment. For example, they may not always have access to electricity or distilled water. They required an easy to use solution, which ProSomnus was able to offer. “In just two short years since ProSomnus’ introduction into the military system, the ProSomnus Devices have become the appliance of choice for more than 95% of Soldiers with OSA that are being managed with OAT (Oral Appliance Therapy). The digitally engineered, appliances have become popular due to the ability to customize the design to meet specific patient needs and reduce the variance found in hand fabricated appliances. Quality sleep is incredibly important to ensure Soldiers can rapidly make the decisions required to ensure their safety and the accomplishment of the mission. OAT and these devices have made a significant impact on Army readiness and worldwide deployability of Soldiers to areas where CPAP machines are difficult or impossible to use,” states Lieutenant Colonel, Phillip W. Neal, DMD, ABGD of the U.S. Army. ProSomnus is currently in the process of rolling out their devices for U.S. Army personnel worldwide.



The company’s latest initiative includes the introduction of a new product for the rapidly increasing Medicare population with OSA. To meet specific coding requirements, ProSomnus developed a new product line that qualifies for Medicare reimbursement, giving providers an effective precision medicine option for treating Medicare patients. The year ahead looks promising for ProSomnus as the company expects to witness an exponential growth in their core business. As a part of this progress, the ProSomnus team is in the process of increasing their employee headcount and expanding their manufacturing capacity. Future expansion plans for ProSomnus include entering international markets and building relations with government organizations and other major institutions.
