EASEE - Epicranial Application of Stimulation Electrodes for Epilepsy - is a system for individualized brain stimulation that employs subcutaneous electrodes planted outside the cranium. Focused on cortical stimulation, the bioelectronic approach targets specific areas of the brain to inhibit the overexcited brain area. The device transmits electrical pulses to where epileptic seizures originate while avoiding side effects like depression or cognitive impairment associated with other forms of treatments. EASEE is implanted with two incisions by means of minor surgical procedures performed under general anaesthesia, stabilizing the brain without touching it and maintaining cranial integrity.

Its two main components, EASEE Lead, and EASEE Can, remain with patients throughout their lives, imposing virtually no external limitations on their routine activities. They are connected through a stretchable cable tunnelled through their neck. EASEE Lead is a wafer-thin pad that consists of thin electrodes that are surgically placed precisely over the origin areas of seizures. EASEE Can is the implantable pulse generator that transmits electrical signals to the targeted areas. Its low-power microelectronics ensure a three-year battery life, granting patients the freedom to lead normal lives undeterred by epilepsys.

The EASEE system consists of four individual electrodes to ensure that the electric field's direction can be adjusted optimally with varying levels of resistance of the surrounding tissue area. It ensures an appropriate current flow surface while achieving a depth of generation similar to traditional invasive products.



The pacemaker operates in dual modes of action for neuromodulation. In one mode, EASEE Can sends highfrequency pulses every two minutes to prevent seizures. In the other, it generates continuous current for 20 minutes daily to regulate over-excitable brain areas in the long term. EASEE facilitates a 52 percent median reduction in seizures, with a possibility of 100 percent reduction, within six months.

By virtue of such innovation, EASEE earned the FDA Breakthrough Device designation in February 2022, followed by a CE Mark in September the same year.

Clinical data from JAMA Neurology, one of the most reputed journals, validated the safety and efficacy of its epicranial focal cortex stimulation.

The meta-analysis of two identical studies involved 33 uncontrolled unifocal epilepsy patients from seven European epilepsy centers who were evaluated in a non-randomized trial for over eight months.

Remarkably, 53 percent of patients demonstrated a full response to EASEE, as defined by a substantial 50 percent reduction in seizure frequency after six months of active treatment. There was a response from 84 percent of epilepsy patients, with no serious events reported related to the device or implantation. The outcomes of this study established focal cortex simulation with epicranial electrode array as a safe and effective alternative to drug-refractory focal epilepsy treatment, paving the way for further advancements in neurological interventions.

EASEE offers an array of benefits compared to conventional epilepsy treatments like deep brain stimulation (DBS), responsive neurostimulation (RNS), and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), substantially improving the daily lives of epilepsy patients.

Unlike the methods that necessitate bilateral drilling, deep implantation of electrodes, and other surgeries, that deliver a modest risk-benefit-ratio, EASEE is implanted just under the skin above the anatomically defined focal point, offering unparalleled efficacy and safety. If necessary, the device can be easily removed, providing flexibility in treatment plans during any unforeseen circumstance.

An already long-practised epilepsy treatment is resective surgery, involving the removal of specific areas of the brain responsible for seizures. Undertaken when drugs fail, it is a high-risk surgery that may cause adverse cognitive and behavioral changes, neurological deficits, and infections. Being minimally-invasive, EASEE helps patients avoid the inherent risks of such surgeries.

Ibrahim Soyudogan, the inaugural patient of Precisis, underscores the transformative impact of EASEE. He suffered from drug-resistant focal epilepsy and experienced multiple seizures daily. Since implanting EASEE in 2020, Soyudogan has been seizure-free, playing sports, undertaking unaccompanied trips, and even earned his driver’s license. The device is not perceptible, which allows him to live like an unaffected person.

The Team and Its Journey Ahead

Specializing in the development of innovative medical devices, Precisis has expertise in the brain’s device-controlled therapies. Its core team, comprising industry experts, has combined their skills to change the paradigm of epilepsy treatment. They take great pride in having developed EASEE in a remarkably short time and successfully traversing the intricate maze of regulatory requirements. The support of clinical experts like Professor Andreas Schulze-Bonhage, Professor Kristl Vonck, and Professor Michael Nitsche has enabled Precisis to make significant strides since its inception.

The company secured grants from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research, strategically partnered with Cochlear Limited in Sydney, Australia, and was awarded a highly competitive grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC). In February 2023, It was voted by the Top 100 Group as one of Germany’s top 100 medium-sized firms due to its innovative drive. In June 2023, Precisis competed in the Epilepsy Foundation’s 2023 Shark Tank Competition held during the 17th conference on Epilepsy Therapies and Diagnostics Development and was awarded 100,000 USD.



On the regulatory side, Precisis received approval for its multi-center first-in-human (FIH) study in Europe in 2018, followed by MDR procedures with CE approval. Having entered the commercial phase in Europe for adults, the company has initiated its clinical program for teenagers. With the EIC grant, the firm initiated its U.S. clinical studies following FDA rules. Its strong foundation of patent security provides it with a sense of confidence as it ventures into highly-competitive and complex markets.

Aside from securing approvals, Precisis is developing the next-generation version of EASEE, which will have AIbased functionalities for customized stimulation frequency, rechargeable pulse generators, and cloud connectivity.
