According to Christopher A. DeNicola, COO of Precision Spine, the product that placed the company on the map is its comprehensive pedicle screw system called Reform®, designed to meet the specific, demanding requirements of degenerative, trauma, and deformity procedures. “Launched in 2011, Reform® was the first product to use a polyaxial screw system employing a triple lead thread form making it very efficient for surgeons to implant,” he explains. Today, broadening the original bellwether product’s design, the company offers multiple clinical variations of the Reform® product portfolio, such as a modular screw form, cortical thread pattern, and a hydroxyapatite coating. Precision Spine works with over 150 independent spinal distributors or agents to offer multiple clinical solutions to meet challenging surgical requirements.

In the spinal devices market, most manufacturers outsource their manufacturing beyond U.S. shores. However, Precision Spine has changed the narrative. The Parsippany, NJ-based company designs, develops, and manufactures all its implants and instruments in the U.S., working in close partnership with vendors within the country.

“We could save money if we elected to move manufacturing outside the U.S., but our mission is to remain a viable, strong manufacturer in the U.S. delivering high-quality, ‘Made in the USA’ products and providing employment opportunities for American citizens,” states DeNicola. The Pearl, MS manufacturing campus has grown to over 30,000 Sq. Ft., employing 125 and positively impacting the local economy while contributing to the introduction of 15 new products in just the last 24 months.

DeNicola attributes its versatile product designs to their talented and experienced group of engineers and manufacturing professionals who work hand-in-hand with surgeons to design and then create advanced products. “Having ownership of our own manufacturing allows us to be incredibly efficient in our production,” says DeNicola. “We can respond quickly and efficiently and because we control our quality and costs, it affords us a competitive edge in the marketplace.”

Another compelling advantage of the Precision Spine model, is the ability to design, develop, and manufacture specialized devices for surgeons in compliance with FDA guidelines. DeNicola draws attention to a particular surgeon who was using products from a leading company for many years but felt that his surgical technique warranted a different type of screw, which was critically important for his patients’ treatment. However, that company was not willing or able to modify their screw per his requirements. At that juncture, Precision Spine entered the picture. “We met with the surgeon, he outlined the screw design needed and we were able to produce precisely the screw he wanted in just four weeks,” extols DeNicola.

With business in 18 countries, the company will soon be launching the next generation of interbody products using advanced materials. “We are the only company in the market today offering PEEK interbody devices that have a dual coating, a substrate of titanium, which is then covered with hydroxyapatite,” says DeNicola. “We continue to modernize our first generation of products as we strive to enhance and upgrade our overall product portfolio to remain competitive.”
