For decades, lumbar spinal fusion has been performed to help patients get relief from their chronic lower back pain using several advances in minimally-invasive and modular surgical approaches to the spine. Predominantly these procedures have been extensively invasive surgeries. The inception of Pantheon Surgical was sparked by Dr. Spann’s thought to find the L5-S1 space, as he went on to develop a rotating lateral interbody fusion device called Epiphany. This ground-breaking invention holds the patents for retraction, method, and implant design. This FDA-approved implant revolutionized the spinal industry using new technology that utilizes a more advanced approach to L5-S1 to benefit and advance patient care.

Epiphany is designed to be implanted through a patented oblique approach known as A.T.L.A.S (Anterior Traverse Lumbar Access System). The first-of-its-kind lumbar fusion device includes the ability to articulate the implant on the inserter while the patient is in the lateral position. This unique procedure allows the surgeon to maintain the anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL) and the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) while placing the Epiphany implant in the most posterior elements of the disk space. Also, posterior placement restores disk height and prevents natural lordosis.

Another equally impressive product in the pantheon armamentarium is the Trident anchored cervical interbody (ACI) fusion device.

The titanium implant with PEEK radiolucent spacer enables the surgeon to deploy the integrated anchor through the adjacent vertebral bodies in one controlled step. The implant is placed in a minimally invasive fashion, and if needed, the anchor can be easily removed intraoperatively or postoperatively. Pantheon will launch the anterior lumbar version during the first quarter of 2021.

The third impressive product is the Orion SI fusion device. When acquiring this product from the SIJ group, Eric Hansen’s (CEO of Pantheon Surgical) strategy was to be one of the first to the door. In typical Pantheon fashion, they took the implant and immediately went to work with AR fabrication with lead engineer Shawn Culbertson at the helm. The addition included a proprietary surface technology change. Smaller sizes include 6mm, 9mm, 11mm, and 13mm in width and up to 80mm in length for a posterior and posterior-lateral approach.

According to Hansen, Pantheon took the good with the bad this year and tooled up during this horrible pandemic. “2021 is going to be a great year, and we all pray for world health. Pantheon has an extremely bright future with zero debt and organic growth putting us in prime position,” he says. Adding to the tools, Pantheon will launch an expandable and porous PEEK interbody device for all cervical and lumbar levels.
