Intraoperative Imaging Solutions for Musculoskeletal Procedures

Fluoroscopy is a cornerstone of musculoskeletal procedures used for hip, trauma, pain management, and spine. Surgeons require fluoroscopy to understand their approach and Intraoperative assessment for optimizing implantation to generate the best outcome for the patient. But what if the primary tool used to visualize the patient’s anatomy is less than reliable due to the Electromagnetic Field (EMF) in the operative room, creating some level of distortion in every fluoroscopy shot taken?

EMF does actually exist in all operating rooms deflecting the trajectory of photoelectrons which produce the images used by the surgeon. The relative position of different anatomy or objects in a fluoro image is not exact unless the deflection inherently created is realized and corrected. The physics has been well documented but somewhat ignored for 60 years.

This is a direct cause impacting patient leg length discrepancy. When planning to restore leg length, it is not the mean that matters; it is the risk of an event happening on the higher end of the range.”Fluoroscopic distortion is quite evident. Yet, 90 percent of surgeons are unaware or confuse it with parallax, which is an entirely different observational error.

For example, patients born with an acetabulum that is not positioned well, deal with early onset arthritic disease and ultimately a total hip replacement. To address this, surgeons will fracture the acetabulum to reposition it. Before OGS, this was done freehand, with distorted fluoro images. There are many variables in play with this approach make it a high-risk procedure. The Phantom MSK improves the potential for the outcome for both surgeon and patient alike.”

The OGS system is presently accurate within 1-2 degrees, with no line of sight issues as are found when using traditional navigation. Quality of life and a higher standard of care remains a crucial indicator of success for any technology deployed for use in the operative suite.
