Reimagining Spine Surgery for Better Outcome

Everyone wishes for a healthy and better life. And needless to say, this wish is all the more fervent for people with low back pain. It is, at present, one of the major debilitating issues affecting much of the global population. Usually, appropriate exercise and conservative care are all a person with low back pain requires. But occasionally, surgery may be required to re-establish the full function of the spine.

That being said, spine surgery has always maintained an unintended reputation for causing as much back pain as it helped. Rarely did surgery deliver the better life it promises. However, over the past years, advances in the diagnostics and treatment of spinal disease have expanded dramatically. With the latest techniques, doctors are now able to rehabilitate patients very reliably. To this extent, NuVasive has recently unveiled the single best anterior cervical system on the market with a comprehensive portfolio called C360™. The C360 portfolio integrates with best-in-class access instrumentation, implants, technologies, and biologic materials into a procedural solution. The unveiling of the C360 portfolio reflects NuVasive’s commitment to delivering innovative technology for the anterior and posterior cervical spine and improving the quality of care even in the most established area of the spine. Alongside the new cervical spine portfolio, NuVasive has also released Anterior Cervical Plating (ACP) system, featuring the thinnest plate (1.6 mm) in the market.

The new ACP system challenges the status quo of cervical spine technology. It is designed to help reduce common postoperative complications, such as dysphagia, malalignment, and adjacent level ossification, by enabling surgeons to customize treatment to patient needs versus a traditional one-size-fits-all approach. It consists of three plate profiles, a wide array of implant length options to match a variety of patient anatomies, and a range of advanced screw offerings with integrated locking covers to enable better screw placement and locking accuracy. As a result, surgeons can optimize plate stiffness for each surgical level to support construct stability.

It is also important to note that the C360 portfolio is an addition to NuVasive’s existing X360 suite of solutions. X360 is a comprehensive system designed for minimally invasive spine surgery. It combines many NuVasive solutions like Surgical Intelligence™, XLIF®, XALIF™, and XFixation™, thereby increasing the efficacy of single-position lumbar surgery (SPLS). XALIF has all the characteristics of a traditional supine ALIF and is specifically designed to access L5-S1, but performed with the patient in the lateral decubitus position. The versatile retractor system enables access for multiple approaches to ALIF and bridges the gap between traditional supine ALIF and the XLIF procedure. Adding to these capabilities is XLIF, the only lateral approach to spine surgery supported by extensive clinical evidence in more than 400 peer-reviewed, XLIF-specific publications. Finally, XFixation offers an adaptable posterior fixation technique. This allows single-position surgery to be achieved from the upper thoracic spine to the sacrum when combined with XLIF and/or XALIF procedural solutions.
