The quest to eradicate tuberculosis has surpassed yet another milestone as a team of researchers from Yale University, Connecticut and a UK-based firm QuantuMDx Group developed a handheld device for tuberculosis diagnosis. The team is led by a professor of electrical engineering, Mark Reed. Their collaborative approach separates tuberculosis cells from the other cell types in a given sample, deriving the principle of dielectrophoresis (DEP) to utilize a force of attraction or repulsion to distinguish different cells in the absence of a charge. The sample containing Tuberculosis cells are subjected to voltage to force a separation between them. The cells are then contained using a ‘frequency dependent phenomenon’, when made to flow over a chipset present on the handheld device.
This is where the biotech firm, QuantuMDx comes into the picture. The company has already developed several beta models and prototypes that are being tested for the proof of concept and the commercial use of the device. These prototypes are aimed at validating the proof of concept and testing them against the medical compliances and regulatory standards of the industry. Upon completion, the device is tipped to detect the presence of tuberculosis cells, even when the presence is considerably insignificant. The team is performing research and development to improve the efficiency of the device, thereby achieving higher accuracy and better portability. One of the most significant checkpoints that the team plans to pass is making the cell phone-sized device available to the remote, resource-hungry parts of the world.
