Ophthalmologists currently employ advanced technology to check, diagnose, and treat various eye diseases, but AI represents a significant advancement in the discipline. Deep learning has been applied to fundus photographs (photos of the back of the eye, including the retina), optical coherence tomography, and visual fields to detect diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and glaucoma, which are all leading causes of blindness worldwide.
Will AI ever be able to take the position of an optometrist?
No, although it may be beneficial to them. Because AI only searches for what you tell it to, deploying it during normal eye exams, for example, would still require collaboration with your ophthalmologist. However, technology can significantly reduce screening time and free up doctors' time to provide more individualized care. Rapid diagnosis enabled by AI also enables the treatment of a more significant number of patients. Finally, AI enables remote diagnosis in specific scenarios, which can be beneficial when wait times are lengthy, or a patient is physically unable to visit a doctor's office.
