Sterilizing surgical equipment and supplies is straightforward with an autoclave. Placing the material to be sterilized inside the autoclave chamber is necessary. After that, the contents of the autoclave are heated to 121°C (250°F) by pressurized saturated steam. Sterilization involves temperatures higher than the boiling point of water. Depending on the size of the autoclave chamber and the materials to be sterilized, the process can take 20–90 minutes.
Most veterinary clinics own autoclaves, but they are usually tabletop models about the size of a microwave oven. As a result, these clinics sterilize medical devices in small batches. Sterilization of surgical instruments begins with proper cleaning after use. After the surgical procedure, all biological debris and dirt from each piece are cleaned within 30 minutes. When washing each instrument, it is best to hold onto it by opening it as the water runs over it while holding it under running water. While the device is in distilled or demineralized water with a neutral pH factor, using a brush with hard plastic bristles is mandatory to ensure all contaminants are loosened and fall off. Protein-containing substances cannot bind together as a result.
Spraying lubricants on the surgical instrument's surfaces, including the joints, helps if the cleaning process stiffens it during opening and closing; when two metal surfaces touch, impurities such as mineral deposits cause corrosion, which causes stiffness.
In order to move on to the final stage of sterilization, it's essential to inspect and ensure that all surgical instruments are clean and functioning correctly. At the start of the sterilization autoclave process, each tool should be pointing upward. Steam reaches every surface of the surgical instrument this way. Each type of surgical instrument should have its own instructions regarding the appropriate temperature, pressure, and duration of the cycle.
After sterilizing each instrument, drying is necessary to prevent degradation, but it is suggested not to use dry heat. The device should be stored in a warm, dry area once it has been removed from its package.
