Pain management helps to cope with problems associated with pain as a result of indirect consequences.
FREMONT, CA: A chronic pain condition can be treated in various ways, depending on its cause. Various approaches are available, from over-the-counter medicines to mind-body techniques to acupuncture. Nevertheless, no single therapy guarantees complete pain relief for chronic pain. The combination of several types of treatment may be the key to finding relief from the condition. Chronic pain sufferers need to learn how to cope with pain and function.

Injections at trigger points
Muscle pain that is caused in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck is treated with trigger point injections. Trigger point injections treat painful spots in muscles with trigger points, which are knots of muscle that form when muscles don't relax. The doctor uses a needle to inject a local anesthetic, including a steroid, into a trigger point (sterile salt water is sometimes injected). The injection's trigger point is turned off, stopping the pain. Most of the time, a short course of treatment will give long-lasting relief.
TENS
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy uses electrical stimulation to ease the pain. Electrodes are placed near the source of pain, and a low-voltage electrical current is sent through them. The electricity generated from the electrodes stimulates the nerves in the affected area and sends signals to the brain that scramble up normal pain signals. TENS is not painful and may be a good way to cover up pain caused by diabetic neuropathy.
Bioelectric therapy
Bioelectric therapy relieves pain by stopping the brain from getting pain signals. Bioelectric treatment also causes the body to make chemicals called endorphins, which are produced when you exercise. Endorphins reduce pain by stopping the brain from getting the message that the body is in pain. Bioelectric therapy helps treat back pain, muscle pain, headaches and migraines, arthritis, TMJ disorder, diabetic neuropathy, scleroderma, and other conditions that cause short-term and long-term pain.
Physical therapy
Physical therapy helps relieve pain by using special techniques to improve movement and function limited by an injury or illness. A physical therapist uses TENS to help with treatment, stretching, strengthening, and pain-relieving techniques.
Exercise
Regular exercise can lessen pain over time by making muscles more robust, more flexible, and more toned. Short rest periods can help relieve pain, but too much rest can worsen it and make it more likely to get hurt when they try to move again. Endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, may also be released while working out. Some people with chronic pain find it easier to do some exercises than others. Try swimming, biking, walking, rowing, or yoga.
