In traditional medicine, patients typically approach medical practitioners when they are already ill and in need of treatment. However, a diagnostic approach focuses on preventing diseases from emerging, thereby controlling them in the human body at an early stage or even before they develop fully. This shift in approach holds the potential to revolutionise healthcare by identifying and addressing health issues proactively.
This innovative approach is propelled by the utilization of predictive and prognostic biomarkers. A prominent example of the impact of biomarkers is the introduction of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, which has significantly contributed to a 40 per cent decrease in prostate cancer mortality rates. Biomarkers are generally employed to guide treatment decisions and assist physicians in predicting a patient's response to a drug while minimizing adverse side effects and optimising treatment plans. Within the realm of in-vitro diagnostics, one notable trend is the increasing adoption of point-of-care testing (POCT), which is typically conducted at or near the patient's location, such as a doctor's office or the patient's residence. POCT offers faster turnaround times compared to centralized and satellite laboratory testing, making it associated with lower costs.
The aftermath of the pandemic and ongoing advancements in the medical industry have highlighted the pressing need for faster, more accurate, and affordable diagnostic tests with reduced invasiveness. This demand continues to grow without any signs of abating. Consequently, the deployment of rapid-at-home testing kits has become an increasingly favourable option, particularly in light of the escalating incidence of diseases. These POCT tests have gained significant importance, particularly in remote and low-income settings, enabling real-time diagnosis with improved efficacy.
