On the basis of the current research of surgical applications, it has come to light that three key technologies can majorly impact the future of surgery: Robotics and Augmented and Virtual Reality.
Robotics
[vendor_logo_first]Robot-assisted surgery supersedes hardware to help surgeons enhance their skills and patient outcomes. A recent report by research revealed that the global market share for surgical robotics was $7.24 billion in 2015, and it is predicted to go above $20 billion by 2023. Robot-assisted surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery. Using surgical robots, tiny cameras can be inserted into a patient’s body from small incisions, and complex and delicate procedures can be carried out with enhanced precision. The minimally invasive approach means fewer complications, like surgical site infections, helps in faster recovery, and reduces pain and blood loss. Surgical procedures that were once regarded impossible have the potential to become a reality with new and advanced robotics. In the future, robotic-assisted surgery will have less-invasive approaches, enhanced imaging, data analytics, and training and optimized learning. Furthermore, the use of medical robotics for precision surgery will reduce costs and improve the quality of life after surgery.
Augmented and Virtual Reality
With Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) becoming available and affordable, their applications in intraoperative surgery and post-operative recovery are widely explored. Neurosurgeons are using AR to identify inflated blood vessels and identify the safest route for tumor removal. In orthopedic operations, with the help of AR, reconstructions of bones can be viewed directly on top of a patient’s body. On the other hand, VR is being used for endoscopic training, and it shows a fall in operative time and error rate when VR training is used for new trainees. In the future, VR 3D technology will be utilized in simulation-based training and will also replace 2D videos and other surgical training packages.
With the continuous evolution of the surgical technology landscape, hospitals need to be on top of their game and prepared for innovations.
