FREMONT, CA: The great Greek physician Hippocrates described the carcinoma tumors as Karkinos, which eventually birthed the word cancer. However, the terror of cancer extends far beyond the golden ages of Greece. Evidence of bone cancer was even found in ancient Egyptian mummies dating back thousands of years. Since there was no effective treatment for tumors, all they could do during those times was to alleviate the pain by leveraging different primitive methods.
The emergence of technology has equipped humanity with practical techniques to battle cancer, and this also applies to lung cancer. The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and image analytics have enabled organizations to study the mechanisms of cancer and make accurate diagnoses. Potentially, the new techniques will lead to the development of precise prognosis of cancer patients.

Leveraging AI and Computational Image Analysis
The advancements and AI and machine learning (ML) have introduced enhanced precision in the treatment of cancer patients. The conventional diagnosis of lung cancer involves the assessment of cancer cells based on morphology. However, even the most experienced pathologist cannot produce the most accurate results. Organizations can leverage machine vision and AI approaches to find the information usually hidden from human eyes.
Machine learning algorithms can be leveraged to train the systems to identify the patterns by comparing the slides against a larger database of computational images. It will enable the system to trace the potential trajectory of the disease, significantly aiding in the diagnosis. One of the reasons for the sophistication involved in cancer prognosis is the variation among the cancer cases. To develop the right medicine, there is a need to accurately classify and characterize the subtypes of cancer to facilitate focused treatments.
Although stage 1 and stage 2 lung cancer can be cured by removing the tumor and lymph nodes, more than half of the patients end up having a recurrence of the condition. Lung cancer is quite aggressive when compared to other forms of cancers and often spreads to the blood vessels. Even if a single cancer cell remains in the lungs after treatment, there is a high likelihood of it proliferating.
The integration of AI techniques will enable healthcare providers to utilize predictive analytics in determining the patients most likely to benefit from chemotherapy. The computerized images of early stage lung cancer tissue could be analyzed through ML, and the relevant predictions could be formed.
