The field of podiatric medicine and surgery has undergone four significant shifts in the past 60 years, including the development of a surgical branch, the evolving role of technology, and changes to insurance coverage.
Foot and ankle physicians are slowly evolving into physicians, not just "foot doctors."
These historical developments remain relevant today and will likely remain so in the future due to the youth of podiatric medicine and surgery. However, if one were to identify the most significant change in the area impacting patients, technological advancements would likely be the agent.
For instance, the capacity to manufacture and employ new materials has enhanced the quality of foot orthoses, allowing for lighter, stronger, and thinner devices to let patients walk more easily. The same is true for footwear, which has vastly improved over time.
The ability to utilize these devices in an ever-expanding variety of ways is the next step. Other technologies, such as 3D scanning, enable us to capture the foot's appearance with less reliance on older materials, such as plaster. This new method complements 3D printing, which has the potential to change the development of foot orthoses. It is possible to envision a time when a podiatrist may produce an orthosis in the office on the same day that a patient's molds are taken, like how some eyeglasses are currently manufactured.
It enables new approaches to evaluate patients, conducting research, and solving previously unanswerable problems. Weight-bearing computed tomography (CT) scanning has created an entirely new field of biomechanical evaluation for various illnesses. At the same time, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly utilized to diagnose numerous diseases. These sophisticated imaging technologies allow physicians to recognize new conditions, such as stress fractures, a precursor to stress fractures.
Innovative point-of-care Ultrasonographic technologies enable physicians to diagnose diseases in seconds instead of the days previously necessary. And it won't be long until podiatric physicians utilize imaging technologies such as MRI and CT in the operating room. Lastly, it is not difficult to imagine CT and MRI taking the next step: capturing images of moving people instead of immobile ones.
New technologies have changed the approach to foot and ankle treatments. New plating technologies, for instance, enable patients to bear weight and engage in physical therapy considerably sooner after surgery than in the past, thereby enhancing long-term outcomes. These advanced technologies have also prompted the development of novel surgical treatments altering our approach to formerly difficult pathologies.
Technological advancements over the past fifty years have greatly impacted the practice of podiatric surgery and medicine. Expect a continuance of this trend, with the use of technology becoming increasingly flexible and pervasive.
