Adopting successful and strong measures helps to fight against climate change big time. Picsun's ALD technology helps to fight against hazardous air from entering.
FREMONT, CA: Picosun's thin-film barrier coating technology Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) provides a solution for reducing the use of harmful process gases, like the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3). At present, the covering methods for Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), relatively thick films, should be grown to get the desired level of performance to meet the required requirements.

The deposition chamber must be cleaned of film residues at regular intervals because of the fast film build-up on walls of the coating equipment. A chamber cleaning process typically does this with SF6 or NF3 plasma. SF6 is the largest greenhouse gas with a 22600-fold global warming potential, which remains in the atmosphere for at least 1000 years. In 2017 alone, SF6 emissions in the EU had a greenhouse gas effect equal to that of 1.4 million cars.
Mr. Juhana Kostamo, the deputy CEO of Picosun Group, mentioned, "We at Picosun want to employ our ALD technology for a sustainable future. Fighting the climate change by all possible means requires collaboration between the innovative industries and solution providers."
"By replacing thick coatings, manufactured with environmentally compromising, energy- and resource-intensive methods, with our ultra-thin ALD film stacks, the significant material, and cost savings are obtained, and hazardous gases are not needed in equipment cleaning," Kostamo added.
The use of those gasses is, therefore, subject to constant scrutiny and increased regulation. Through switching to Picosun's ALD nanolaminate barrier technology, unrivaled barrier output can be obtained with skinny, pinhole-free films. This also removes the need to clean the equipment for the deposition after every few cycles. Picosun's ALD reaction chamber is cleaned in normal production usage only once per 3-6 months, so simple mechanical bead blasting instead of fluorine-based plasma treatment is appropriate.
