Choosing the right walking aid will help patients. There are several factors to consider. Patients can get a recommendation from a physical therapist. Gait, balance, cognition, cardiovascular fitness, musculoskeletal challenges, and neurological conditions will be assessed. Depending on their weight-bearing status, they may need a walking aid.
The living area and work environment may also benefit from occupational therapy. Patients may require different walking aids if they must negotiate stairs, depending on their mode of transportation (car, public transportation, etc.) A combination of different types may be recommended.
The stigma of needing a walking aid may discourage people from using them. They reduce fall injuries, however.
Types of Effective Walking Aids
Knee Walker
Knee walkers are easy to use and are ideal for getting around without placing weight on their legs. People who have trouble using crutches or would rather not be slowed down by a walker may find a knee walker helpful.
Walker
The walker is the most supportive walking aid, but it is also the most cumbersome. It is great for people with poor balance or less upper body strength. Modern walkers have many features and options that make them more convenient. Patients should consider foldability, weight capacity, handle height, walker heaviness, and width when shopping for a walker.
Each step requires lifting and moving the walker. Some walkers have wheels or glide on two or all four legs to slide between steps rather than being picked up. Rollators are four-wheel walkers that often have brakes for safety and a seat so they can rest when needed.
Crutches
Crutches remove all weight from an extremity. Crutches can provide excellent support and freedom to those with strong hands. Patients with poor balance or upper body strength may find crutches less helpful.
Crutches must be fitted for the correct height, and
there are several tricks to using them safely. Crutches take some time, but a few simple steps can help. Get instructions or training before patients leave the facility if they have been treated for an injury or had surgery.
