FREMONT, CA: A lightweight, battery-operated system that can help with pain relief is a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit. The equipment has leads connected to adhesive pads called electrodes. The electrodes are located near the painful region on the skin. To help curb pain signals in your body, it provides mild electrical impulses that can be changed in frequency and intensity.
Benefits of TENS
Compact in nature, the TENS unit makes it easy to hold and use on the move. It can sometimes be carried in a pocket or clipped to the belt. By providing a non-painful stimulus to the nerves around the targeted site, TENS interrupts the pain cycle, reducing the pain signals going to the brain. The electrical impulses may also cause endorphins to be released by the body, acting as a natural painkiller.
Uses
TENS can be employed to relieve acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) pain and muscle cramps from various conditions, including arthritis, knee and back pain, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy, neck pain, pelvic pain from periods, or endometriosis.

TENS’ Efficiency
Researchers are still evaluating how powerful pain relief TENS units are. A 2013 study showed that for fibromyalgia patients, TENS was effective in relieving pain. Another research indicated that TENS might improve bone pain for cancer patients, but the findings were inconclusive given the small number of randomized clinical studies.
Research does show that certain factors may influence efficiency. It may be more beneficial to adjust the TENS unit’s dose (intensity and frequency) so that no tolerance is established for it. By using the highest strength that is still convenient, one can gain. Besides, it can help to relieve pain by using the electrodes in areas that are acupuncture points.
Although more research is needed, TENS is considered a safe pain-relief alternative for many conditions because it is non-invasive and does not need medication, which often causes adverse side effects. If a person is interested in trying a TENS pain unit, a physician might refer them to a physical therapist who can explain how to use the TENS unit for a specific condition.
