Maintaining adherence to regulatory standards is no longer enough as the pace of innovation accelerates and the demand to get innovative devices to market grows. Medical device manufacturers must adopt a proactive quality management approach.
Fremont, CA: For a good reason, the medical device industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the world. Medical devices, ranging from stethoscopes and syringes to the most advanced radiation equipment and AI-based monitoring systems, play a crucial role in the health of individuals whose lives are dependent on the goods' quality, consistency, and safety.

Maintaining adherence to regulatory restrictions is not adequate as the pace of innovation accelerates, and the demand to get innovative devices to market grows. While a compliance audit can tell a company whether or not a product complies with current FDA and ISO regulations, it can't tell them how to improve their development and manufacturing processes, optimize collaboration, manage workflows, anticipate and mitigate supply chain issues, minimize risk, optimize storage and distribution, or provide a positive customer experience. That's when quality management solutions that are proactive come into play.
The following are important factors to consider for quality programs to go beyond compliance and into proactive practice:
Encourage cross-company collaboration
To assure quality across the business and with suppliers, it's critical to break down functional silos and promote effective collaboration—with everyone from the raw material suppliers to the plant floor quality inspectors. If a nonconformance issue arises, a process automation solution can alert all parties involved, allowing them to rectify the issue.
Develop effective document control procedures
Documentation is critical for the safe use of any medical device, yet inefficient document management is frequently a contributing factor in documentation errors. To decrease errors and incorporate training, documents must be reviewed and authorized. An automated system can ensure that all papers connected to certain items are categorized in such a way that anyone who requires them can find them quickly and easily at any time.
Implement a comprehensive corrective action plan
When it comes to dealing with production issues, the first step is to identify the problem. Corrective actions must be linked to relevant parts of the compliance record in order to express the whole context of the problem, and each corrective action should be linked to the proper source, whether it's audit results, nonconforming products, or customer complaints. The corrective action plan must be designed, approved, and implemented once the fundamental cause of the problem has been discovered. The effectiveness assessment will help ensure that the corrective action put in place eradicated the problem once the action correction plan has been implemented.
