Researchers have unveiled the world’s first fully disposable endovascular surgical robot.
FREMONT, CA: Surgeons using the robotic system find it more precise and flexible to carry out surgical procedures. It allows them to better see the site compared to other traditional techniques. Surgeons can perform more delicate and complex procedures smoothly that are difficult with other methods. Top of all, robotic surgery enables minimally invasive surgery possible. Eventually, minimally invasive procedures lead to less pain and blood loss, faster recovery and smaller scars. A research team from Microbot Medical, a company with offices in Massachusetts and Israel will soon release the world’s first fully disposable endovascular surgical robot. The newly designed device will reduce radiation exposure and physical strain on the physicians.

The device named LIBERTY can be used in a variety of cardiovascular, neurovascular, and peripheral vascular procedures where the physicians can manipulate catheters using fly-by-wire technology. Surgeons can remotely operate it such that they can be kept at a safe distance from radiation emitted from fluoroscopes. Besides, the system makes the endovascular procedures less straining for physicians who would otherwise have to stand over the surgical table and manually steer the catheters. The company touts the product’s “One & Done” such that one product cannot be reused for many procedures while there is no need to manage multiple disposable items.
The newly designed system setup is easy and straightforward and provides intuitive remote operation capabilities. These features eliminate the physical strain on the physicians and at the same time, reduce radiation exposure. Further, it will democratize vascular procedures by shortening the physician’s learning curve. For these reasons, the device will gain inclination in the interventional community. Also, it benefits clinically and technically in various subspecialties, like neurovascular, cardiovascular and peripheral vascular interventions.
LIBERTY will revolutionize the way surgical robotics are currently used in endovascular procedures, by eliminating the need for capital equipment, thereby reducing radiation exposure and aiming to streamline the use of disposables during these complex surgical procedures.
