FREMONT, CA: Most people are aware that UV light has germicidal capabilities and may kill viruses and bacteria, but companies using it need to understand how it works and its various advantages. UV light is electromagnetic radiation from different wavelengths, including UVA, UVB, and UVC, with short-wave UVC having the most potent germ-killing effects. UVC radiation with a wavelength of 254 nanometers (nm) has been shown to effectively kill dangerous germs and bacteria.

Hospital disinfection has always been a significant problem, but recent incidents leading hospitals across the country nearing capacity have made cleaning and disinfection even more critical. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are illnesses that develop within 48 hours of admission, three days after discharge, or up to 30 days after surgery.
How Does UVC Light Disinfect?
UVC germicidal lamps were developed and constructed to deliver the exact wavelength required for disinfection, replicate UVC light. UV lamp manufacturers are experts in creating UV lamps to get the optimum germicidal emissions required. Ozone-producing lamps generate UV electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength of 185 nm and are helpful in various water and air applications and removing odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.
UVC radiation swiftly penetrates and changes the DNA of dangerous bacteria and virus cells, leaving them incapable of multiplying. A viral cell that is incapable of replicating is thought to be dead and harmless. UVC light has been shown to eliminate various viruses and bacteria, notable superbugs such as MERS, SARS, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), C. Difficile, and others.

Where Can Hospitals Use UV Light?
UVC germicidal lamps can be found in various germicidal systems, including UV air purification, UV water treatment, and surface sterilization. In hospitals, UV light can be utilized in a wide range of sterilizing systems to disinfect:
Air – UV air purification systems for HVAC feature UV lights that filter the air as it travels through the central ventilation system. UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation) devices in the upper chamber can also sterilize the air.
Water – UV water treatment devices remove hazardous germs from drinking water.
Surfaces – In patient rooms, UV sterilization lights can be placed over counters, and in operating rooms, they can be placed over surgical tables. UVC robots can sanitize surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas, in patient rooms, operating rooms, hallways, and bathrooms.
Food – Hospitals can also use food irradiation to reduce the spread of disease by preventing foodborne infections like E. coli and Salmonella. UV light sterilizing systems have numerous advantages in restaurants and cafeterias, and they could be particularly beneficial in hospital kitchens and eating rooms.
