Technology transforming surgery:
Laparoscope
The laparoscope is essentially a very small keyhole camera with a protruding front end resembling a proboscis. It enables a surgeon to introduce the camera's front piece into the human body without creating a large wound. This has aided in the development of laparoscopic surgery, in which a surgeon uses thin instruments and a laparoscope to perform minimally invasive procedures. Numerous lives have been saved with laparoscopic surgery. There is a lower risk of hemorrhage, and the tiny wounds created are significantly less prone to infection than sutured lacerations created by conventional surgery.
Laser
Until recently, eye surgery was considered a high-risk procedure. The eye is a highly delicate organ, and post-surgical infections have been reported to result in blindness. Cataract removal is a significant area of eye surgery. Traditionally, cataract removal required an incision of the corona with a blade, which left the area extremely susceptible to infection. Today's cataract surgeons have an incredible instrument at their disposal that has dramatically changed the game: lasers. Without the need for manual incisions, lasers enable the sculpting and destruction of tissue.
Surgical gloves
Today, it would be unimaginable to do surgery without gloves, yet until the rubber glove was introduced first, this was exactly what people did. Surgical gloves are primarily used to function as a protective barrier between healthcare workers and patients during surgical procedures.
