What is a cochlear implant?
A cochlear implant is a small electronic medical device that helps people with hearing loss that ranges from mild to severe. It is used to aid adults, children, and newborns with hearing loss. The cochlear nerve is stimulated electrically by the device. It is made up of both external and internal components.
Behind the ear, the external component is inserted. It is made up of a microphone that picks up sound waves. The sounds are analyzed and converted into digital signals by a speech processor. These signals are transmitted to a transmitter, which then passes them over to the internal receiver. A magnet holds the transmitter and receiver together.
Behind the ear, the internal part is inserted beneath the skin. The digital signals are converted into electrical impulses by the receiver. The cochlear nerve is stimulated by these impulses transmitted to electrodes in the cochlea and forwarded to the brain by the nerve. As a result, a sense of hearing is developed.
Even though the brain detects sounds, they are not the same as normal hearing. To understand how to appropriately comprehend these sounds, speech therapy and rehabilitation is required.
How is it different from a hearing aid?
A hearing aid can be defined as a medical device that helps people with hearing loss. But unlike a cochlear implant, it does not use electrodes to transfer sound signals. Hearing aids, on the other hand, make sounds louder by using a microphone, amplifier, and speaker. This can assist people in hearing things more clearly. Hearing aids are not surgically implanted, and they can be worn behind or inside the ear.
If users have mild to severe hearing loss, hearing aids are usually the best option. The amount of amplification provided by the gadget is determined by the level of hearing loss. Hearing aids can help those with severe hearing loss, but they don't always help speech comprehension. A cochlear implant might be a better option in this scenario.
