A study conducted to see how to handle heart failure sheds light on the connection between mental and physical health.
FREMONT, CA: A significant reduction in depression symptoms and better self-care was observed among the heart failure patients on receiving behavioral therapy via telehealth services, which was reported in a small study conducted by AbleTo and Humana. According to the study, heart failure patients who had access to behavioral health services managed their conditions in a better way.

The survey conducted had 194 patients with very little to moderately-severe heart disease, covered through Humana's Medicare Advantage plan. The study was of eight-to-ten-week telehealth program provided by AbleTo, which is inclusive of access to cognitive behavioral therapy and a coach to allow them to transform those instructions into a plan.
Considering the results, patients saw a remarkable improvement in their mental health and awareness of physical instructions.
47 participants reported symptoms of depression in the genesis of the study. Less than 41 percent of the participants had a decent Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) score, which evaluates each person's ability to recognize symptoms, get treated, and comply with the essential health measures, like taking medication and maintaining a low sodium diet.
At the end of the program, participants' symptoms of depression came down by 52.4 percent. There was an increase in the number of patients with adequate self-care scores to 57 percent; hence, a 16 percent jump was observed. Several participants realized physician instructions, at 87 percent.
An observation was made based on the behavioral health issues that were prevalent among the patients, which in turn had ramifications in their self-care.
Through this study, AbleTo has been able to measure the relationship between heart failure and mental health. It sometimes serves as a proof point that behavioral health services are an essential part of a patient's holistic regime.
Bestowing patients with access to behavioral health services can massively reduce hospital admissions. It is resulting in lesser costly bills. Predominantly it can help in pulling patients out of a vicious cycle.
