Patients who have undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery and then exergames-based treatment are just as successful as those who've only done normal physiotherapy post surgery.
FREMONT, CA: According to publishedresearch findings, patients who received arthroscopic shoulder surgery and then underwent physiotherapy that incorporated games, known as exergames, had outcomes that were comparable to those of individuals who followed regular physiotherapy after the surgery.

once the patient underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery, the researchers randomly assigned 64 patients to either standard physiotherapy or physiotherapy that incorporated games from the Medical Interactive Recovery Assistant (MIRA) digital platform paired with a Microsoft Kinect after the surgery. The major outcome examined by the researchers was active range of motion, which was objectively quantified by MIRA and Kinect. The secondary outcome measures included the Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS), the DASH score, and the EuroQol-VAS, all of which were measured 12 weeks following surgery.
The results revealed that there were no statistically significant differences in baseline range of motion between the standard and exergames groups, and that there were no statistically significant differences in forward flexion, abduction, and external rotation between the two groups postoperatively. At 12 weeks postoperatively, the researchers discovered that the mean OSS improved from 29.25 to 38.2 in the normal physiotherapy group and from 27.1 to 35.1 in the exergames group, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups. The researchers also found no statistically significant changes in the mean DASH score between the two groups, with improvements from 38.13 to 16.98 in the regular physiotherapy group and from 42.3 to 22.54 in the exergames group in the normal physiotherapy group. According to the findings, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the EQ-VAS at any timepoint. A gradual schedule of exergames recommended by a physiotherapist delivers an excellent post-shoulder surgery rehabilitation program, the authors wrote.
