Sophisticated assessments are now in use, enabling doctors to screen for complex diseases like cancer at an earlier stage, where cure rates are higher, and symptoms may not yet be present. Scientists are working to change the traditional healthcare model through the development of next-generation diagnostic tests. With traditional medicine, patients can visit doctors when they find something wrong, but diagnostics in the future will be more about preventing diseases from breaking out.
New IVD Trends
A significant trend in the in-vitro diagnostics domain is the rise of point-of-care testing (POCT) performed at or near the patient site, such as the doctor’s office or the patient’s home. POCT offers faster turnaround times than central or satellite laboratory testing and is cost-effective.
Recent years have demanded faster, more accurate, affordable, and less invasive diagnostic tests. During the peak of the pandemic, rapid at-home testing kits were indispensable tools. As the prevalence of diseases continued to rise, POCT became more crucial, especially in remote and low-income settings.
Further trends in the IVD market include the high demand for low-volume sample analysis and high-throughput screening techniques. An emerging technology with the potential to answer these challenges is known as microfluidics, or miniaturised devices manipulating the behaviour of a fluid through a series of reagents. Microfluidics devices are often referred to as lab-on-a-chip due to the technology’s ability to integrate several laboratory functions on a single integrated circuit.
Microfluidics as the future of IVD is a debated topic in the sector. The potential for microfluidics is only emerging, with advantages including low-volume sample analysis, high-throughput analysis, automation, rapid analysis times, a small footprint, low cost, portability, and disposability. As the industry continues to move toward POCT, lab-on-a-chip devices help it get there, and many medical device companies are currently innovating in this space.
For example, a company has commercialised a POCT blood analysis system that can perform up to 14 tests using 0.1 ml of blood on a single disc. They could also see the results in as little as 12 minutes. Another company marketed a device facilitating clinicians to rapidly test for 22 pathogens associated with a range of respiratory infections. The single test needs one nasopharyngeal swab and offers a diagnosis in 45 minutes. Thus, microfluidics can take IVD to new levels by unveiling its full potential.
