FREMONT, CA: An 88-year-old woman has expressed her delight at becoming the first patient in the United Kingdom to receive a pioneering bionic eye implant, which allowed her to detect signals for the first time since she went blind. The woman from Dagenham was affected by geographic atrophy. The disorder is the most common type of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which affects millions of people throughout the world and can result in blindness.

Experts claim the solution, which involves a groundbreaking chip inserted behind a person's blind left eye, provided promise of vision restoration to patients suffering from dry AMD visual loss. She was given hi-tech camera glasses to wear that filmed the world in front of her before transferring the data to the implant, which transmitted an electrical signal to her brain, just like natural eyesight.
The unidentified woman said in a statement posted by the Moorfields eye hospital NHS foundation trust that losing her left eye's vision due to dry AMD had prevented her from doing the things she enjoyed, such as gardening, indoor bowling, and watercolor painting. She also added how ecstatic she was to be the first to receive this implant, and that she was looking forward to resuming her hobbies, and she genuinely hoped that many others will benefit as well.
She received the Prima System device, which was developed by Pixium Vision in France, at Moorfields in London as part of a European clinical trial supported by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Center at Moorfields and the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology. The implant operates by surgically inserting a 2mm-wide microchip under the center of a patient’s retina. The patient then wears special glasses, holding a video camera that is linked to a small computer attached to their waistband.
