Making a Difference in Pressure Ulcer Treatments

Each year millions of people develop pressure ulcers that bring associated infections and pain along with it. However, 90 percent of pressure ulcers can be prevented if the caregivers could identify why and how they occurred. Caused by prolonged pressure on the skin, especially to patients confined to beds or wheelchairs for more extended periods, pressure ulcers can add to hospitalization costs. Working on a government project on pressure ulcers a decade ago, Peter Egelund, an engineer with a strong technical background, was determined to bring an end to this problem. He worked with a group of caregivers to understand all the aspects of this issue and laid the foundation for Levabo to provide inflatable positioning cushions. The company’s products offer optimum comfort and hygiene with an ergonomic design that provides stability to pressure ulcer patients.

Egelund highlights that while there are already similar products in the market, it is important to understand the amount of air to be inflated to provide maximum relief and effectiveness. Hence, Levabo’s cushions consist of paper markers that show users the recommended amount of air to be filled, approx. 75 percent during inflation. “Our products are focused on prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers and specially designed to make a positive difference to the already known and used products,” says Egelund, Owner and CEO of Levabo. Similarly, the cushion’s outer layer is made of soft, flexible, heat and moisture-absorbent nonwoven felt, with excellent properties for direct skin contact. This way, the cushion creates an envelope effect eliminating the pressure on a single spot on the skin from a hard surface underneath.

Essentially, all of Levabo’s cushions are single-patient use, which ensures patient hygiene and prevents bacterial contamination. Patients can also take the cushions from the hospitals to their homes to support their critical needs without struggling to arrange for other devices for home use.

Levabo’s vast product range also encompasses a Turn All turning system, a mattress with automatic side tilt that enables turning patients sideways 30 degrees in a lateral position. The Turn All system helps to reposition the patient to relieve them from extensive pressure on one side. Since it is automated, caregivers can set the sequence of turning the patient for every half or one hour.

Also, the system helps optimize resources as tilting the patient no longer requires the help of two or more caregivers, boosting return on investment. In home care, the Turn All system helps caregivers save one or two visits during night time only for turning the patient on their beds.

A testimony to Levabo’s Turn All system is that of an elderly home. Usually, two caregivers had to turn the patient during night time, when most often the patient would wake up in the process and get disturbed from sleep. After using Levabo’s Turn All system, the patient gets tilted automatically at night without affecting his sleep. The caregivers also have to no longer manually turn the patient giving them time to carry out other tasks.
