Mina Kristensen, Patient Care Manager

The technological revolution over the last decade has fueled new advances in ophthalmology. The inception of robust offerings and solutions has enabled ophthalmologists and eye care specialists to enhance their care, thus facilitating a better quality of life for the patients.
The aging population is significantly more susceptible to eye diseases when compared to the younger generations, with over 10 percent of people over the age of 80 who has vision loss. However, in the wake of the degenerative afflictions related to the eye, the technological developments in ophthalmology have equipped the healthcare providers with practical tools to deal with the ailments.
The innovation in multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) the development of apodization has enabled not only the enhancement of optical quality in patients but also their range of vision. Where once precise selection and accurate biometry were crucial patient satisfaction, the rise of diffractive technology has facilitated a significant reduction in intense visual side effects.
Apodization enables the optimization of the focus of light by distributing appropriate amounts of light to variably distanced focal points. The edges of the multifocal steps in the IOL have been contoured to improve vision quality and reduce the dependence on pupil size and lighting. Also, the development of aspheric lenses has greatly enhanced spherical aberration.
The ophthalmic advances have led to the inception of numerous start-ups, each contributing the industry. The shift has spurred venture capital companies to invest in technology. The glaucoma segment has witnessed significant developments with the rise of hybrid solutions leveraging the concept of traditional glaucoma surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
The biomaterial used in the biocompatible stents is inert and averts excessive inflammation and scar formation. The stents are more compact and can be inserted through a small needle track. The technology is designed for patients with mild to severe glaucoma. Also, the myopia treatment has improved over the years with multiple clinical trials aimed at testing the concentration of atropine most suitable to alleviate the myopic progression.
Among the advancements in ophthalmology, the three-dimensional digital imaging for heads-up live retina surgery is one of the most significant. By leveraging a stereoscopic high-def monitor, surgeons can enhance visibility and reduce fatigue, both for themselves and patients.
The emergence of innovative ophthalmic start-ups forecasts new technological advances in the sector, equipping eye care specialists with exceptional capabilities and improving the outcomes for patients. As the aging population increases, the ophthalmology sector will witness significant progress to fulfill the demand
