Amir Jaffer, MD, MBA currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, a 535-bed Complex tertiary Care teaching hospital with level 1 trauma center and a level III Neonatal ICU.
He has oversight over various departments and has worked across disciplines to create a strong culture of safety and decreased hospital acquired harm by 70% through implementation of best practices. This was achieved by laying a foundation of the institutional values including the respect credo, enhancing communication and incorporating a high reliability framework of tiered huddles. He is dedicated to justice and a proponent of a diverse teams and workforce.
As the Chief Medical Officer at NewYork Presbyterian Queens, what are some of your key roles and responsibilities that you have on a daily basis?
As the Chief Medical Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, my key responsibilities include overseeing our incredibly talented medical staff, quality of care, growing clinical service lines, oversight of our graduate medical education and research programs as well as implementation of new and evolving safety measures for patients. I’m grateful to work on an incredibly collaborative team that is committed to our evolving clinical and cultural transformation to remain a regional center of excellence. We strive every day to be the first choice for patients, employees, and physicians.

CMOs must always look for new and innovative ways to stay ahead of the curve. Also, they must continue evaluating new technologies and platforms and experimenting with different marketing channels. Your views on this?
NewYork-Presbyterian Queens has the incredible advantage of having world-class doctors from Weill Cornell Medicine. Through this partnership, we’re often evaluating new tools to help make care more efficient and safer to stay ahead of the curve and on the forefront of some of the most incredible technological advances. We do this all while keeping patient safety paramount.
Rapid digital evolution makes it hard to keep your head above the surface of the deep digital ocean. Is adaptability vital for staying afloat?
Adaptability is vital and using technology to transform care is essential, as long as patient safety and quality is not compromised.
What would be your piece of advice for your fellow peers and leaders?
My piece of advice is to always stay curious and seek opportunities to learn and teach. I am never shy to ask if I can come and observe or round in an area that may not be as familiar to me, and I encourage others to do the same. I am always open to exploring new technologies to assist with enhancing safety or efficiency in care delivery. I also welcome others to ask questions and challenge the norm. You never know what you’ll uncover, and it keeps us all sharp and transforming care delivery.
