Complex rehab technology, commonly known as CRT, is a phrase many wheelchair users are acquainted with, but the general public does not know much about it. CRT stands for medically necessary and specially configured adaptive equipment for people with impairments.
This category includes manual and power wheelchairs, adaptive seating systems, alternative positioning systems, and other mobility devices that need analysis, fitting, configuration, adjustment, or programming. This isn't the average hospital chair because it is more specialized equipment customized for every person's unique requirement to maximize their usefulness and independence.
People who require CRT must have access to it. Health insurance covers specialized CRT devices under the same benefit category as standard durable medical equipment (DME). The DME benefit was introduced several years ago to help older people with their mobility. It's usually a lot less complicated and customizable than CRT.

CRT's unique design helps reduce pressure injuries, which is one of the most significant physical advantages. Pressure sores are common in incontinent people and cannot weight shift or lack sensation in pressure areas. If left unchecked, they can become life-threatening and require many months of bed rest to recover.
As a result of spending so much time sitting down, most people using wheelchairs develop spine or postural problems. This can restrict their range of motion and lead to subsequent issues that hinder them from conducting daily activities. CRT helps prevent or treat spinal and posture-related disorders because it is custom-molded to the user's frame.

A CRT wheelchair can meet a variety of demands, such as medical and functional. Getting dressed, feeding, cooking, toileting, grooming, reaching, and communicating are examples of these activities. Complex rehab aims to provide people more freedom by including components that help them safely execute these activities independently or with minimal help.
