Due to a lack of safe alternatives, women suffer silently from the side effects of hormonal birth control and the inconvenience of current menstrual hygiene products. Hormonal contraceptives, despite their ability to prevent pregnancy, come with many side effects. Some of the more serious side effects include stroke, heart attack or even death in otherwise healthy women. Shaped like a sailor’s hat, FemCap is designed to cover the cervix during sexual activity, preventing sperm from reaching the cervix. A woman must insert the FemCap and place it over her cervix before sexual arousal. It can be worn 15 minutes to several hours before sexual arousal and stay in place for up to 40 hours. The device must remain inserted for at least 6 hours after intercourse to avoid the possibility of live sperm causing conception. With practice, insertion becomes as easy as inserting a tampon and removal is facilitated by the integral removal strap incorporated in the design. FemCap can remain in place for repeated intercourse during the span of 2 days; however, it should be removed at least every 48 hours for cleaning even if no intercourse has taken place.

FemCap comes in three sizes in accordance with the diameter of the cervix, and the elasticity of the vagina that varies considerably among women. The most commonly used FemCap is the 22 mm (small), which is designed for women who have never been pregnant. The 26 mm(medium) size is for women who have delivered through C-section or have experienced a miscarriage or abortion. The 30 mm (large)is designed for women who have previously given birth vaginally.

The Second Generation FemCap, when used correctly with spermicide, has been proven to be 92 percent successful in preventing pregnancy. FemCap does not hinder spontaneity or reduce sexual pleasure because it must be inserted before sexual arousal. The device is specifically designed with a wider brim to increase the surface contact between the FemCap and Vaginal walls. The brim enhances stability and effectiveness. It costs less than $8 per month with unlimited use for two years.
