Breaking the Vergence-Accommodation Conflict Barrier

Computer-based interaction with patients and doctors is the new reality of modern medicine due in part to COVID-19. The promise of Virtual and Mixed Reality as a more immersive tool for medical care has been elusive because of a significant design constraint. This issue is the focus conflict caused by Virtual and Mixed Reality in the human brain. This is known as the Vergence-Accommodation Conflict (VAC) caused by the confusion our mind faces as it processes a virtual reality image. The brain naturally knows to refocus the eyes for different visual distances. As a person uses virtual reality, the brain gets confused by an artificial sharp visual image at a distance which would typically require the brain to refocus the eyes.

As the eyes are not required to refocus, this results in nausea, fatigue, headaches, and discomfort.

Today, there is a solution to the problem—electronic liquid crystal lenses that help reduce or resolve VAC.

Virtual reality will allow doctors to diagnose injuries in a 3D environment

This technology has made quantum leaps from ultra-small devices developed for electronic contact lenses to 30mm lens diameter and scaling up to 50mm. Shifting focus is also necessary for next-generation mixed reality devices that use virtual and augmented reality technology to create an environment where physical and virtual objects can exist and interact in real-time. These devices need electronic shifting focus to ensure sharp images in the user's field of view. "Our technologies, including LC (Liquid Crystal) electronic technology, can help overcome some of the greatest challenges of projecting visuals in a virtual environment," says Joel Zychick, the CEO of eVision Smart Optics. He notes the same issue is resolved in transparent eyewear used with virtual reality using eVision patented HUD technology. Unlike Virtual Reality non-transparent goggles, the user needs to focus on data projected on the transparent lens in the user's field of view without compromising distance vision.

Virtual reality will allow doctors to diagnose injuries in a 3D environment. Surgeons will have access to scans and data in their field of vision for critical procedures. We all understand the need for enhanced tools to treat patients in a more immersive environment without the risk of transmitted disease.

We often take for granted the role of vision as one of the most powerful tools in medicine. Advances in vision technologies, including microelectronics, liquid crystal focusing, HUD, and in-frame sound input, will make our vision an even more potent medicine tool.

King & Spalding files patent infringement lawsuits against Lenovo Group, Luxottica Group SPA, Seiko Epson Corp and certain of their affiliates for e-Vision Smart Optics

Statement on Patent Infringement Lawsuits filed by King & Spalding, LLP on behalf of e-Vision Smart Optics Inc. and e-Vision Optics, LLC against Seiko Epson Corporation, Epson America, Inc., Lenovo Group, LTD, Lenovo Holding Co., Inc., Lenovo (United States), Inc., Luxottica Group S.P.A., Luxottica U.S. Holdings Corp., and Luxottica of America Inc. for patent infringement.
SARASOTA -- e-Vision Smart Optics Inc. and its affiliates (the e-Vision Group) reports that it has initiated separate law suits in Federal District Court against Seiko Epson Corporation, Epson America Inc., Lenovo Group, LTD, Lenovo Holding Co., Inc., Lenovo (United States), Inc., Luxottica Group S.P.A., Luxottica U.S. Holdings Corp. and Luxottica of America, Inc, alleging that certain products marketed by each organization infringe a number of patents owned by the e-Vision Group. "The e-Vision Group has devoted significant energies and resources to the development of its technology and IP for which it has filed, owns or controls over 440 patents world-wide. Although the existence of this patent portfolio is well known in the industry, in our view certain products in the market today infringe on our patents. As these matters are now subject to litigation, both myself and our representatives will not be able to comment further," said Joel Zychick, CEO, e-Vision Smart Optics Inc.
