Pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, and insurance companies are continually looking for new business opportunities in the form of wearables close to patients to track their health. One such thing is capillary analysis. Capillaries are special blood vessels that supply the nutrients and oxygen that we usually ingest throughout the body and expel excess waste products from the body. Capillary analysis gives information such as the length and twist of capillaries that can be used to derive any suspicion of lifestyle-related disorders or lifestyle-related diseases. Japan-based Capillary Analysis System (CAS), can scan the capillary on a fingertip.

The patented technology analyzes the capillary of fingertips by merely putting the finger on the designated space and adjusting focus. The system scans the user’s finger and quantifies their capillaries. “We provide the number, the length, the width and some other values of the capillaries by using patented technology which can help clients to measure capillaries easily. Without our technology, researchers have to measure these values manually when they want to research,” says Dan Takeno, CEO of the company.

CAS’s technology, which can analyze dozens of capillary image features in several seconds, is a revelation. The technology has helped the company research for biometric data in partnership with several research institutions. Based on the research and its analysis know-how gained through data, the company found relationships between diseases and capillary.

“We are strategically going to disclose the results from now on and expand business opportunities,” says Takeno.

He cites the example of RIKEN, Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, which had a research theme to create new pre-symptomatic disease parameters. CAS worked with them and found some relationships between current used blood tests and fingertip subcutaneous capillary image, which made them visualize and quantify pre-symptomatic disease status, the body condition between healthy and ill.

In another instance, some pharmaceutical companies wanted to evaluate the effect of their food ingredients. By using CAS’s technology, the client was able to assess the impact of the intervention. In other words, the company supported them in comparing the study subject`s fingertip capillary images before and after the intervention, which led them to prove that these ingredients improved capillary status in a week or a month.

Continuing with such success stories, CAS plans to expand its business in Asia first. At the same time, the company plans to develop capillary improvement solutions by cooperating with pharmaceutical companies and food companies. Recently, Tohoku University found that some characteristics of capillary are related to glaucoma. Along the same lines, CAS’s technologies will accelerate the research for the relationship between diseases, health conditions, and capillary. Also, CAS would like to provide consumers risk assessment in lifestyle diseases and pre-symptomatic diseases via capillary analysis system, as home self-medication. “Though there are many disease parameters in the current medical history, there is no health parameter. Therefore, we cannot know who is healthy and whether our lifestyle is good or not. By establishing health parameter using capillary analysis, we create the better world where everyone lives longer and healthy,” adds Takeno.
