Anastomotic failure remains a significant concern in surgical procedures, with reported failure rates as high as 20 percent. While the failure rate is lower in microvascular surgeries, ranging from 5 to 8 percent, gastrointestinal surgeries usually have a higher rate of anastomotic failure. Even when the procedure is successful, there is a potential concern for complications, with approximately 15 percent of all procedures requiring reoperation due to concerns over the patency, or flow, at the anastomosis.

Arterial anastomoses are typically performed manually using sutures, which presents a significant risk of human error. Placing the sutures too close together or far apart, tying the suture too tight, or accidentally puncturing both walls of the vessel with the needle can lead to tissue strangulation, necrosis, or obstruction of blood flow. Given that most of these procedures are performed on blood vessels as small as one and a half to two millimeters in diameter, misplacing the needle or suture is not uncommon and can have dire consequences.
