Medical ventilation was always a critical aspect of modern medicine. Yet historically, it received less attention and investment. The pandemic brought medical ventilation care to take center stage in public awareness and interest. Infused with the Israeli innovation spirit, Biovo Technologies was founded with the commitment to advance hospital patient ventilation care to new levels of both patient safety and simplification of tasks for the medical caregivers.

Medical ventilation use can be roughly divided into two hospital settings, one is short-term anesthesia during surgery, and the second is long-term ventilation in Intensive Care Units (ICU). The Biovo Technologies line of products addresses both.

Innovation in mass-use hospital disposable medical devices is in a straitjacket of limitations. The devices are relatively low cost. Unlike surgical tools, there is limited acceptance of premium payment for quality and performance. Moreover, with ICU nursing staff shortage and high workload, there is little acceptance for the addition of new procedures.

Consequently, the rate of innovation in medical disposables in general and for ICU, in particular, is stifled. Rather than seeing this as a deterrent, Biovo Technologies was founded ten years ago, by Dr. Oron Zachar and Elad Einav, on the idea that there is a significant room for improvement on many practices and disposable devices for medical ventilation, which remained mostly unchanged for multiple decades.

Altogether, our devices also significantly reduce the cost of patient care.” Starting with cost-effectiveness, most of Biovo Technologies’ products provide significant performance advantages at little or no cost difference from competing market devices. With respect to workflow, the devices typically do not introduce new procedures but improve, streamline, and enhance the existing ones.

Biovo Technologies’ investment comes into fruition with a series of six innovative devices coming into the market during 2021-2022, including:

(i) CUFFIX – the first disposable cuff pressure regulator and monitor, which continuously balances the tracheal tube cuff pressure. Subsequently, it prevents tracheal injury and eliminates the need for repeated checks and adjustment work by the nursing staff;

(ii) B-CARE – a unique oral care kit for respiratory ventilated patients. It is the only kit comprising360 degree soft brush and flexible onboard disinfection liquids ejection element;

(iii) LMB – the laryngeal mask of Biovo for surgical anesthesia, which maintains better seal at self-regulating low cuff pressure, with ultra-adapting cuff enabling success to ventilate a broader range of patients. The LMB operates at lowers cuff pressure and reduces the risk of nerve injury in surrounding tissue;

(iv) LME – a dedicated fast intubation laryngeal mask for emergency medical services (EMS), ensuring ease of use and the highest success rate in the first attempt;

(v) HyperForm family of Endotracheal tube (ETT) and tracheostomy, introducing the next generation of self-adjusting cuff balloons, resulting in a better seal and reduced risk of trachea injury;

(vi) A biofilm cleaning closed suction system developed by Biovo Technologies and acquired by Teleflex.

“We started 2021 with simultaneous international launching of our products in Italy, Korea, Australia, Brazil, and continue to expand our evaluation activities with potential partners to carry our offering to the U.S. market and rest of the world,” states Dr. Zachar.

Modern surgery technology and techniques are so remarkable that essentially most surgeries succeed. The crucial challenge is whether the patient will make post-surgery recovery out of ICU, especially for ventilated patients. Key determinants for patient recovery prospects are avoidance of hospital-acquired infections (HAI) and secondary trauma due to the residence of respiratory tube device in the body, prolonged sedative state, and hygienic care, which is work-intensive and difficult to maintain. A unifying goal and theme of our products is to save lives by lowering the risk of patient treatment complications.

ICU departments consume about 20 percent of total hospital costs in the United States. Mechanically ventilated patients are the most expensive ones in the hospital—typically cost 25 percent higher compared to non-ventilated ICU patients. Thus, an improvement of ventilated patients care is a worthwhile investment for the actual reduction of general health care and hospital costs.
