In the 1970s, the World Health Organization embarked on a mission to bring vaccines— against several diseases such as diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and more—to every child, even in remote areas of the world, with its Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). While the world was getting ready to witness a revolutionary step in healthcare, the WHO faced a few challenges in executing the EPI. A primary obstacle was the temperature sensitivity of the vaccines. The lack of equipment for maintaining the apt temperature meant that the vaccines could not be delivered with their full potency to remote areas. As a result, the WHO held a meeting in London inviting household appliances manufacturers to find a solution. Electrolux, a worldwide leader of such devices, emerged as a trailblazer in providing a vaccine cold chain globally. Gradually, the medical branch of Electrolux in Luxembourg changed to B Medical Systems, becoming one of the largest manufacturers and global distributors of medical refrigeration devices. To further illustrate the efficiency of its products, Provost elaborates on how out of 800 solar refrigerators, more than 790 units remained operational despite a natural catastrophe. Since the refrigerators were well designed and robust, they continued to supply cold chain goods in critical areas suffering from the catastrophe. “We are proud of our products as they helped in making a difference in saving lives especially in such critical circumstances,” adds Provost.
