Novel Hyperbaric Treatment for Healthy Aging

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” is a quote that best exemplifies Aviv Clinics’ value proposition.

The startup has introduced a novel, scientifically backed delivery of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to improve, and in many cases, reverse the adverse effects of aging, especially on the cognitive impairments front. The Aviv Medical Program is an individualized three-month regimen that combines HBOT sessions, cognitive and physical training, and augmented with nutritional and lifestyle coaching to leverage the body’s receptive mode. In-depth assessments, analytics and a full physiologic evaluation result in a comprehensive plan that is customized to each client’s health improvement goals.

In the Hyperbaric Suite, the pressure is equivalent to that at 33 feet under sea level, which increases the oxygen levels in the client’s bodies by around 15 times. This brings the gas to the cells that need it, replenishing tissues, especially in the brain that has long been deprived of adequate quantities of oxygen due to chronic destruction of micro blood vessels. Aviv’s HBOT procedure entails having the client inhale100% pure oxygen for 20 minutes through a mask, followed by a five-minute mask off, breathing of the ambient air inside the chamber that contains oxygen in normal concentrations. This protocol triggers a physiological change where the body, having experienced breathing higher levels of oxygen while the mask is on, perceives the five-minute mask off “air break” as a relative low oxygen state. In this relative low oxygen state, the body anticipates cell death triggering the production of stem cells—the holy grail of cellular regeneration—to naturally heal or rebuild any type of tissue, including blood vessels that transport blood to the brain.

“Cognitive testing is done to evaluate brain functions related to memory, information processing speed, attention, executive function and motor skills,” adds Globig.

Regarded as a measurement for cellular aging, Aviv conducts the technologically advanced telomere measurement. Telomeres are essentially caps at the end of chromosomes which are designed to protect the DNA when it replicates. With age and continued cell division, telomeres get shorter, leaving the chromosome vulnerable, at which point the cell ceases to divide. Cells then become what the medical community terms as non-productive, senescent cells that can cause age-related cognitive decline, chronic conditions, and even cancer in some cases.

Aviv Clinics Highlights New Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Study Bringing Hope to Fibromyalgia Patients

Study finds hyperbaric oxygen therapy is more effective than pharmaceutical treatment for fibromyalgia patients with a history of traumatic brain injury

one of the most advanced brain research and medical clinics in the world, today is sharing the results of a new study that shows hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is more effective than pharmaceutical treatment in fibromyalgia patients following traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The study, Hyperbaric oxygen therapy compared to pharmacological intervention in fibromyalgia patients following traumatic brain injury: A randomized, controlled trial, was conducted by the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Shamir Medical Center and Tel Aviv University, and published in PLOS ONE.
The study evaluated the therapeutic effect of HBOT on fibromyalgia patients with a clear clinical history of TBI, one of several potential triggers for fibromyalgia, and compared it to the current standard pharmacological treatment available. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition clinically characterized by widespread pain and dyscognition affecting 2-8% of the general population. Sixty-four patients were randomized to one of the two study arms, and results revealed that HBOT was much more effective than pharmaceutical treatment in all measured domains. HBOT significantly improved pain symptoms, quality of life, and emotional and social function, as well as increased brain activity in relevant brain regions.
Additionally, the study shed light on the biology responsible for fibromyalgia. The malfunctioning brain tissue responsible for the development of fibromyalgia in these patients was induced by mechanical injury to the brain — a TBI. After repairing the damaged brain tissue with the HBOT protocol, there was a significant improvement in all evaluated parameters. By repairing the biological core of fibromyalgia and instead of just addressing the symptoms by chronic use of medications, this new study marks a new therapeutic road for fibromyalgia patients.
“The HBOT protocol has been used to improve quality of life and alleviate symptoms for patients suffering from a number of brain injuries including stroke, TBI, concussion and age-related cognitive decline,” Dr. Shai Efrati, the research group leader and chair of Aviv Scientific’s Medical Advisory Board. “We are able to apply the same protocol to heal damaged brain tissue and alleviate symptoms for fibromyalgia patients. Because we’ve gained vital insight into how dedicated new protocols of HBOT can repair the biological core of fibromyalgia, there’s hope for fibromyalgia patients they didn’t have before.”
HBOT is a medical treatment in which 100% oxygen is administered at an increased environmental pressure. Aviv’s unique HBOT protocol, the hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox, generates oxygen fluctuations and is being used to repair and regenerate damaged brain tissue in several types of brain injuries including TBI, stroke, PTSD and age-related cognitive decline among others.
