Opening a new frontier, roboticassisted surgery (RAS) allows surgeons to peer deeper into the human anatomy and access parts of the body with precision beyond human capability. With the mission of making surgical robotics readily available, avateramedical has developed its surgical robot system, avatera, which enables precise keyhole procedures or laparoscopies. The avatera system ensures maximum patient safety and comfort for surgical teams and is currently being rolled out to partner clinics across Europe.

The avatera system consists mainly of two space-efficient components: a surgical robot with four robotic arms for controlling instruments and an endoscope, and a control unit that has a slender eyepiece, an integrated and flexible seat, and haptic manual input devices and footswitches for easy handling.

Three of the four fully articulated robotic arms precisely guide the surgical instruments, and one holds the endoscope. On that front, avatera offers slender, minimally invasive instruments with a diameter of 5 mm. Four prominent instruments offered by avatera for urological and gynecological applications are bipolar Metzenbaum scissors for cutting and coagulation, an atraumatic grasper for holding and grasping tissues, a bipolar Maryland dissector for dissection and coagulation, and a needle holder for guiding surgical needles for suturing. avatera’s singleuse concept for instruments and sterile accessories eliminates crosscontamination, prevents expensive sterilisation processes, and provides greater patient safety.

The control unit features an adjustable seat that offers an ergonomic position throughout the surgery. Its eyepiece is exceptionally slender and does not obstruct the surgeon’s mouth or ears. avatera displays the image at the same size as the natural field of view of the human eye. The display’s QXGA resolution and high colour fidelity provide a clear, true-to-life image that captures the tiniest details. Due to the absence of external fans, the low noise level contributes to seamless communication for surgeons in the OR.

Going above and beyond, avatera will leverage data analytics and artificial intelligence to provide advanced efficiencies for healthcare facilities. It allows workflow optimization and documentation of surgeries. Surgeons can also leverage avatera for advanced analytics, predictive maintenance, and decision support.

The avatera system has successfully passed the conformity assessment procedure and can carry the CE mark, which documents the conformity of the avatera system with all applicable legal and normative requirements. All components of the system are allowed to bear the CE mark. After its successful introduction into clinical practice earlier this year, the number of key clinical sites using avatera is steadily growing in Europe.

To acquaint surgeons with the system, the avateramedical training team uses various digital tools, like a simulator or an online learning environment, to provide state-of-the-art training. Augmented and virtual realities offer immersive training environments. This helps surgeons familiarize themselves with the accessories, team roles, and peri- and intraoperative challenges, like communication and decision-making during a roboticassisted procedure.
