Alertgy’s journey toward bringing a real-time, non invasive, on-demand blood glucose monitoring tool to the market started on a Sunday morning. Two years ago, Marc E. Rippen, the founder and president of Alertgy, faced a frightful situation as he woke up. It was pretty early and he realized that he couldn’t find his wife. Hastily, he walked over to the living room and saw her sitting on the couch, staring at the oblivion. He called her out nervously, and strangely there was no response. Rippen knew that his wife had Type 2 diabetics and perceived that she was going into low blood sugar coma. He ran to his refrigerator to get a glass of orange juice and helped his wife to drink it. 10 minutes later, she said, “Where am I?” while staring at Rippen who replied, “You are home, everything is fine, you just had low blood sugar.” Although, Rippen had saved the day, he realized that this was a massive problem that needed a real-time detection solution. With an aim to devise a system that can monitor blood sugar in real-time and alert individuals, Rippen founded Alertgy.

The company’s system not only monitors the blood glucose but also notifies individuals using it about their glucose levels so that they can manage their condition wisely. The next couple of years have witnessed Rippen’s idea turn into a revolutionary product, the AlertgyCGM. “We have reduced the size of the system to deliver it as a wearable, and also shrunk the sensor element by using advanced dielectric material,” he adds.

Now being clinically tested as a wearable device, the revolutionary non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring wristband offers a patient-centric and pain-free method to measure a person’s blood sugar level without the use of needles, lancets, strips or glucometers.

AlertgyCGM is equipped with cutting-edge sensor and materials technology and provides continuous sugar level readings via a smartphone app. It can also alert users when their blood sugar gets too low or too high. In cases where the user ignores the alerts or is unable to respond, the system notifies emergency contacts that have been saved in the application. “The goal of the app is to help diabetics better manage their condition and minimize the long-term health risks linked to it,” informs Rippen. In addition, the device’s interface stores blood sugar history and enables the users to transfer the collated data to the physician.

Alertgy is presently working to introduce a clinical version of its product to be used in hospitals and clinical environments to help the doctors in monitoring their patients blood glucose non-invasively. “One-third of the people that get admitted to the hospital have a diabetic issue and each of them spends four to five days in the hospital to get the blood glucose under control,” states Rippen. In the future, Alertgy’s next generation device will monitor blood glucose levels of diabetics and will help them to avoid having to go to a hospital, by enabling them and their doctors to better manage their condition. This will help them extend their lives, let them enjoy a worry free better quality life and ultimately save them, their insurance agencies, and hospital’s costs. Going ahead, Alertgy is presently working to miniaturize its product using a propreitary micro-electronics chip that can be embedded into a wristband. The company is in the process of conducting pre-clinical and clinical trials to gain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for their CGM devices in the coming years. Alertgy is working with the Cleveland Clinic, Ochsner Health Care, and other leading edge healthcare providers to improve their ability to better treat and manage their diabetic patients.
